Rebuilt Engines ?
Rebuilt Engines ?
Im looking at a 3rd gen that has had the engine rebuilt. I obviously don't know much about engine rebuilds.
What all do you need to do in order to rebuild a engine ? And when you do rebuild the engine do you start counting from 0 miles again ? Is it good a idea to buy a car that has had its engine rebuilt ?
thanks

Re: Rebuilt Engines ?
Find out exactly what was done, and what about the engine was rebuilt.
Theres always a chance he just rebuilt the top end of the motor. Took the heads off, put new springs in, and put the top end back together. Then they didnt do much to freshen up the motor.
If they fully rebuilt the engine find out if it was done by a reputable shop. When rebuilding an engine completly you need to have the block taken to a machine shop so it can be honed, checked for cracks, decked, and a bunch of other things i dont remember. If you dont get the machine work done you take a million risks, and most importantly if you dont have it done the piston rings probably wont seal properly when its put back together.
Like said earlier if it was done by buddy in his garage then be ready to rebuild it again. If it was done by a reputable shop in your area and 100% rebuilt its not completly like a brand new motor but its pretty damn close.
