Question on brake job.

I did a complte front brake job on my car today. I cut the rotors, packed bearing, greased everything up good, compressed the piston, and replaced the shoes. Now, when Im driving my car, when I stop, I can smell a burning smell, and if I go high speeds and stop, smoke will come from the brakes. What's the deal? Did I do something wrong or are they just going to do that till they get worn in?

Couple things to check for..Did you over tighten the wheel bearing nut? Is the car pulling to the left or right when applying the brakes which would indicate a sticky caliper. Did you check your caliper to knuckle clearance so the caliper has enough room for heat expansion and can freely move back and forth when they get hot and expand. Did you clean your caliper bolts and put anti-seize compound on them? Did you pull the caliper bolt bushings out of the caliper ears and clean up any corrosion and also put anti-seize on them? How were the brakes before you did the brake job?

sounds like u might have gotten some grease, WD-40 or somethin on the pads (shoes are for drum brakes, just so u know) or maybe somethin on the rotor. jack it up and take the tire off and see if there something on the rotor. try turning the rotor by hand also,it should have only a little bit of resistance.

hope that helps

Thanx. Think its just bearing grease on the rotor. When I was pulling the rotor off the brake lathe, I got some grease on it, how long should it take to get it all off?

Were the caliper slides nice and free? these little short "tubes"
that the pin goes thru lock in position and hold the inboard pad aganist the rotor causing the pad to press on the rotor all the time.

Before I install rotors I always clean them with brake cleaner and do the same to the pads. Try that.
