Project Car
Project Car
Im planning on getting an 87-92 iroc-z/z28 soon for a project car... and i've been told the L98 really can't push that much power. What would you suggest i do? spend money just modding the L98 (cuz i wanna get a 350 if im going to end up modding it) and rebuild the tranny, or should i go look at a junkyard for a crashed 4th gen and pull out a LT1 or LS1 motor (and i'd mod it up as well) and swap the tranny with a t-56? if im going to swap motors, i might as well get look for one that comes with a t-56 too. and if i swap engines, i might as get a 305 instead right? since it would be cheaper and i could probably find one with an M5 that would be easier to swap...
Any other ideas would be nice... im just looking for suggestions and opinions. thanks guys

I think there are quite a few guys on here with very strong L98s, so Im not sure where that info came from. But if you get a TPI L98, then add a Holley Stealth Ram, fuel pressure regulator, more powerful fuel pump. Headers and exhaust I think you would be running pretty strong. As well as a few complemetary suspension mods of course.
Really if you were gonna spend all the $ to to an LT1 and T-56 swap you could probably just buy an early 4th gen and come out better financially.

If you plan on making your car manual, make sure u buy a manual car to start off with and make sure its a v8. Otherwise you will nickel and dime yourself to death with all the crossover parts. I suggest a 305 with a t-5. Then go to a bunch of junkyards and get quotes for a ls1/lt1/l98 complete engine w/ ecm. Ask for the t-56 while u are at it. Then check ebay while your at it, If you feel comfertable on ebay that is, some guys have 1000+ immaculate feedback selling low mile LS1/LT1's with free shipping.

but i only got 2 grand to spend... thats why im doing this as a project... ill add more parts to it as i get the money for it. it'll be fun to have a car you made a beast out of with your own hands
lol
btw, how much is it pushing to the wheels?

an l98 can support up to 400 hp with the stock heads when heavily ported all you need is cam and intake and as far as im concerned thats not bad at all. Tell us your power goals and im sure we can help you figure out whats the best way to do it.
what i really wanna do is crank up the hp with some engine mods, and then bolt on a procharger and some nitrous. i probably wont spray though cuz i dont know if the block would be able to take that much crap, lol
OK, I got my 3rd z-28 for 400 bucks. Car was almost perfect, except blown motor. I pulled it and installed a 94 lt-1. You can get an lt-1 and tranny (auto) for around 1500 to 2000. remember, these motors last a long time and make lots of power! Thats the way i would go!! Power and longevity! (plus the 3rd gen is the best handling)
