Question porting 305 heads

Well I have a set of 305 heads with a 1.94 valve now. Sittingbull told me to port them the only problem is I can`t afford the tools to do it. but I do have a Dremel tool with stone grinding wheels so I tryed it and it did a ok job at smoothing the ports but not really making the port bigger. now is it worth going to all the trouble smoothing and making all the ports shiny? will it make any power difference at all?

Very little. The reason metal shines is because it's so smooth so it reflects the light. So if you make it shiney, then it's really smooth so it would let everything flow a little better which would make a little more power. If I were you I'd do it just because it looks cool when you're done and every little bit of power is good

DO NOT polish your intake ports. Leave those a little rough.

You can however polish your exhaust ones to a near chrome like finish if you want

Good call. I saw 1.94 and I assumed he was talking about the exhaust ports.

I agree on a carb. car, because if not, on the way from the carb. to the cylinder if their is no turbulance then the fuel will not stay atomized...On the other hand on a port fuel injected car the fuel is only supended in the air for a short trip and the atomization occurs because of high injector fuel pressure therefore a slightly rough surface is not necassary...No I haven't dyno tuned both to see the diff, so I have no actual proof, and I don't want to start a argument...this is my opinion only.

Have you read the thirdgen.org thread (by SittingBull, a link to it is in his thirdgen.org signature) on porting heads?

It is FULL of answers to any question you could have.

Also, there is a guy in our area that is the 305 head G0D. He has flow'd his heads before, and managed to acheive similar #'s compared to a Vortec.
His SN is F-BIRD'88 on thirdgen.org, and his name is Russ. Nice guy. Never met him, but he's given me tons of advice.
I'm in the (slow) process of porting my 416's right now. I'm more worried about rebuilding my double pumper at the moment, tho.

P.S. do you still head out to Seaway on fridays? Are you going to be there next friday. btw I came too late to meet you that one friday like a month ago. I showed up at 9, and there was only a couple people I know there.

There is no such thing as a 1.94 exhaust valve on a small block chevy.

It is actually the opposite!

Yes, it is very hard to successfully port your runners and bowls with just a dremel. But if it has a 1/4" collet (or chuck) then just buy a few carbide cutters like the ones I pictured in my how-to. Click on the link at the end of my sig.

NT is right, Russ Patrick is THE 305 head guru and goes well out of his way to help anyone out with their projects. He is on the Tech/General forum at www.thirdgen.org almost daily.

thanx for the replys my tool only has a 1/8" chuck maybe I can find mini cutters for it like the ones in sitting bulls sig, I`ll see what I can do with the dremel tool I`ll get a flex shaft too for it.

Hopfully I can get a grinder and some cutters by the winter and do the factory LG4 heads right

Have you thought of renting a die grinder? That's what I did. It was $50 for a week. Just enough time to get it done going 4 hours a day.
