Plans for a 305

aloha..im planning on building a strong 305 LO3.
first I'm putting in a bigger better TBI unit (http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...22&prmenbr=361)

intake manifold built for this TBI unit by eldelbrock
Full exhaust, headers, y-pipe, cat and muffler. K&N air filter element a computer chip from jet, lower thermostat, and full MSD ignition 6AL.

I running the 700R4 tranny and im going to install a shift kit and overhaul kit with the various kickdowns and tranny items for it. And to finish it with a lighter flywheel and a holeshot 1200 torque converter. connecting this to the rear end wii be an alumnium driveshaft.

im removing the smog pump and my A/C and installing either a junked Borg warner rear end, or just the posi itself.

I dont know what is a good cam shaft and a pair of heads..if anyone can help me on this i would like the advice. Also im thinking about stroking this motor out to a 335...what u think?? Any advice would be cool. Thanks

Re: Plans for a 305

there are very few heads out there for the 305.

i know there is the World S/R Torquer 305 but other than that i'm not sure.

i'd say if you were willing to spend the $$ on all those parts, just buy a 350 block and build from there.

and isn't a 1200 stall pretty freakin low? wouldn't a 2800 be better?

Nothing wrong with working with you got. My buddy has the exact same setup in his 92 LO3 Firebird. He acutally did evertyhing your thinking of doing. The car picked up ALOT with those mods and acutally wasnt expensive to do either as the parts are out there. Another option is to bore the trottle body out yourself as he saw a bit of gain doing it that way. THe headers and exhaust also woke up the car. ALthough deleting the air pump and stuff didnt net anything it just looks cleaner in the bay. Check out thirdgen.org in the TBI section for alot of into what you wanna do.

Why ditch the AC? I wouldn't waste your time stroking the 305, or doing much with it, 350's are easy to come by, get one.

First off, go to Thirdgen.org and go to the TBI board and start reading. There are certain things you need to know before you even attempt certain modifications, especially PROM burning. Start here: http://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/show...hreadid=227281

I'm putting in a bigger better TBI unit
That TBI unit has 2" bores, which means you need to bore out whatever intake manifold you get, because the stock bores are only 1 11/16". It also requires some custom wiring.

a computer chip from jet
Don't even bother with that crap. Seriously, none of those PROMs (Jet, Hypertech, etc.) are going to do anything for your car. You're going to need to learn how to burn your own PROMs to get the most out of all of those modifications you've listed. The stock PROM can't even handle a full exhaust.

and a holeshot 1200 torque converter
teke184 is right, a 1200 stall is really low, the stock stall is 1600-1800.

dont know what is a good cam shaft and a pair of heads
You have a good number of options here. You can get stock 305 TPI heads (a lot better than the stock smogger swirl-port heads), World Products S/R Torquer heads, you can get some Vortec heads, etc. As for camshafts, you can get a stock LT1 or LT4 cam, or any other decent roller cam that fits your needs.

Re: Plans for a 305

i woudl suggest the holley street dominator tbi intake over the edelbrock. it has a bit more total volume and will give you more top end power charge.
for heads i would suggest L98 vette heads. they are nice light alumninumn and with a simple gasket match and 3/5 angle valve job will work very nicely with a 305. they are also a 58cc chamber head, so you won't lose any compression.
for a cam thre is no need to go too nuts. look into either a stock LT1 cam or a comp extreme energy grind.
for rear gears look into 4.10's, 3.73's woudl be the minimum entry to keep teh car happy. for stall speed it is up to you, a mild combo like i am suggesting would do well with anything in teh 2600-3000 range.
jsut make sure you take care of your tuning. read that DIYprom board on TGO very closely. all tuned with bigger tb, heads, intake, and a mild cam you can easily put out 300hp

hope this helps.

Re: Plans for a 305

I know a guy who did the same thing. He bassically had money laying around and a tbi car and "just wanted to see what it could do!". Not the best way to spend your money but if thats what you want to do MORE POWER TO YOU!

Anyways. He had the big TB that was made for the 454 on it with a nice cam. He is best friends with a guy who owns a machine shop so he got the heads fully ported. Just some shortie headers and aftermarket panhard bar.

He got that thing to run a 13.2!! I could not believe it. Good times can be made from these 305's its just a matter of matching all the parts!

Good luck and have fun

Re: Plans for a 305

When I did my motor I put on vortec heads and a performer intake. You can get an adapter from the VOLVO/PENTA boat division that will adapt from carb bore to TBI. I took out a v6 and put in a v8 with a jet chip just so I would have a v8 chip with a little more fuel for the head and intake swap. Motor runs good but doesn't have quite the power I think it should. I am in the process of setting up to burn my own chips. I believe that is the only way to get fuel and spark dead on. I think there are other adapters out there cheaper than the volvo/penta but I wasn't aware of them at the time. The only problem with the vortec intake is there are no provisions for EGR valve. So if you are saddled by emmissions you have to do some plumming. There are places out there with kits for that. BTW the volvo adapter is a 2" boreand will accept 454 TBI units
