Question opinions from people with experience with headers

Alright, I've gotten enough mods that I think it's time to throw in some headers to get rid of the crappy manifolds. Question is, I have removed all of the AIR injection system on my car when I put the cam in and need to know what headers are a good, inexpensive brand to use(ie- hooker, heddman, edelbrock but no SLP, too expensive). If I get some that have the AIR connections on them, would I need to cut them off or just cap the top of them?

Thanks for the info,
Kyle

SLP's are the best, then Hooker and Hedman, and way far down the list at the bottom are Edelcrocks, in my opinion. Do a search on this forum and you'll see many many topics on headers. Capping off the AIR tubes is easier than cutting them off, and makes them more valuable later if you have to sell them.

Another vote for SLP. I liked the ACCEL Tri-Y better because it kept it's looks but they don't make them anymore.

i got pacesetters they came from jc whitney, they aren't great but they get the job done, there cat back system is ok too, i have it, the muffler they send with it is junk though, a couple good backfires, and it will have a big hole in it, i actually blew the end off of mine, (long story, involving a stuck throttle)

Well...you guys are gonna hate me. I guess being a broke college student starts to get to you. I broke down and bought the 100 dollar hedmans. They don't have AIR hookups or an oxygen sensor bung, but they're cheap and should be fine. I am planning on getting a y-pipe custom made to hook up to my high flow cat. If there's anything I might need to know about this, any opinions are welcome. Thanks,
Kyle

Well, if you're going without the AIR system, why are you still going to hook up a cat? Most of the places I know won't pass a car on emmisions without the air equipment if it was supposed to have it. So just cut the cat out, and get a little extra flow

the only reason i didn't buy the headmans was because they had no, y-pipe, i kinda wish i would have gotten something without the airtubes, but i just plugged them up

For about a hundred bucks, you can buy the Hedman y-pipe already made for the shorty Camaro headers. Part # 17470.

it also might be wise to check your local junkyards every couple of weeks...i got exhaust from the y back (with high flow cat) for $55...it looks practically brand new...the front and driver side of the car was bashed in...but the exhuast bolted right up to mine without a problem!

I already have gone without a cat before for about a year and it always smelled like gas. Also I got the cat last year and the AIR came off this last March when I put my cam in. I passed inspection here in Texas in June w/o the AIR but WITH the cat. So I think i'm gonna stick w/ it.

How's the Hedman y-pipe? I heard it was like only 2.5" y-ed into 2.5". I want it to be y-ed into 3" because my exhaust is a custom 3" from my 3" cat back to the flowmaster so it would be useless if the y-pipe was too small.
Thanks for all the info guys.
Kyle

PS - I like the junkyard idea. I'm gonna search around here in Dallas and see what I can find.

Actually, now that I think about it, my car passed inspections with flying colors. It didn't have AIR then and had a hypertech PROM(I recently switched back to my original PROM). Not only did it pass inspection, but lately with my setup i've been getting over 16 mpg in the city and around 22 on the highway!

Does anyone know anything about the hedman y-pipe? Just wondering if it's worth buying it or having one made.
