opening up hood louvers...
Well my IROC has the lovely little hood louvers on it that are purely for show. Underneath the hood there is a padded layer to add a dampening effect to make everything quieter...I am thinking about cutting our the padding around where the hood louvers are so that hot air from under the hood can get out how much is this going to add to the noise of my car and is there any reason that i shouldnt do this?

With the little bit of surface area you'd be cutting out, it shouldn't make that much of a difference soundwise. Why not make the louvers functional while you're in there?

when you say functional do you mean taking in air? Doesnt do me much good with a tpi engine figure the open spaces could do a ton of cooling though. Any idea how the "functional" ones were done?

Hood vs. Heat
If your just tring to let heat out from under the hood, try this it's easy and quick. Lift open your hood and count in three spaces (clips)on the back rubber weather strip and cut the ends off this will give you about 6" on each side of the hood that will do the job well. Some people take the whole strip off,but I have found by doing this you get hot air in through the air vent. Try it you may like it.

i just did this last week i took the louvers off and cut two holes per side where the single stud sticks out leaving 6 per side holding them on the i cut slits in the louvers the same direction as the louver and it all looks stock

Re: opening up hood louvers...
I am restoring a 1991 RS conv. the hood is a 1990 Z28 hood. I am bidding on a set of louvers I haven't seen them physically but from the pictures I've seen their is already some gap between louvers. Couldn't you just cut inside the clips?

Re: opening up hood louvers...
The louvers are basically just a single piece of plastic with ridges on it. They do not flow through. And even if they did you still don't have any openings in the hood. So if you want to make them functional you first need to cut holes in the hood under the louvers, and then cut the louvers into like 10 pieces and somehow fix them into place
If you want functional, get a Crossfire hood from a 82-83 Camaro. Just saw one in the local junkyard a few weeks ago.
Finally, if you do somehow make them fucntional, you'll still need to fabricate an airbox to work with them. And once you do all that, you'll see ZERO gain. That area of the hood sees negative pressure. All it will do is ventilate the engine compartment a little better, and allow water into the motor.

if you want to make more air for your car, its simple if you have the dual airboxes, cut the bottom of them off & then run dryer hose down to the fog lamp & people have been doing that for a longgggggggggggg time.
