Question Open element for TBI

Last night I dropped on a 14" open element assembly to replace the stock setup. It looks much nicer I'm confused about the lots of hot air VS a little cold air tradeoff.

More importantly, I am wondering how I get a 3" filter on there. I am using the little paper 2.5"? one that came with the assembly at the moment. The top of the aeembly barely clears the bolt. In fact the wingnut just fits by a hair. Can I use a longer bolt (to replace that weird bent one) or will it have clearence problems?

I tried to use an assembly who's bottom was angled down to accespt a bigger filter but the distrib was in the way. Am I doomed to use a 2.5" forever? I'd really rather get a 3" K&N in there if I can.

The main clearance problem is getting it to fit under the hood, which isn't far off the top of the air cleaner stud. I have used commonly available drop-base 14x3 air cleaners on similar carbureted applications and they usually fit just fine.

If you're looking to add cold air to your open element air cleaner check out this site:

the tbi intake is abotu 1/4 inch shorter than the carb intakes were. you can get away with a 14x3 flat base open element, the stud will just barely touch teh insulation on teh hood usually.
the quantity of air that you pick up is so much great than the volume of air that the stock air box can flow that the temperature becomes unimportant. even if you gut teh thermac out fo the air box the tubing is still too small to be of much good, then you have the riser ring which forces air to funnel in as well, causing even more flwo disruption. non of this is int eh way with an open element.

The ramairbox.com designs are interesting, I don't think it's something I realy need to pursue. Not with my current setup anyhow.
Actually, given the redline on a stock 305 the 3" is probably about as much as I will need. Granted, I may go with an alternate design if/when I get working on the heads/cam.

And I refuse to put any HomeDepot ductwork under my hood as an airscoop *yuk* Been there, done that ... never again
