Question One hell of an oil leak

So one day after racing and finding my car to be acting sluggish< i was beaten by a miata> i popped my hood and found smoke coming out my intake. Opening of the filter box revealed to my eyes that my filter waqs holding about 2 quarts of oil and in the front tubing was about 1 quart spilling onto the front of my car HELP ME MY CAR IS DYING. Why is this happening?

Holy cow, you really did it now! About only thing I can think of is a compression test to hopefully point you in the right direction.

Oil in the aircleaner huh? When was the last time you replaced your PVC valve and breather? Pull the PVC valve out of the valve cover and shake it... Does it rattle? If not, that's your problem. They're real cheap. Replace the PCV breather (filter) while your at it.

It sounds like you have a crankcase pressure problem here.

I can only think of one thing and it's not a happy though. Here's my reasoning:

There's only one way that oil can get into the air cleaner, and thats back up through the little tube that pulls in filtered air for the PCV system. Therefore, oil must be blowing UP through that tube. For this to happen you have to have pressure in the crankcase, and that means blowby. Big, nasty ugly blowby. I hate to say it, but this may be the first sign of broken rings. A compression check is DEFINITELY in order.

Don't scare the guy. A faulty PCV valve is the culprit 90% of the time. Bad rings are more uncommon.

Talking thnx

Well dang. I had asked one of my friends from the board about it and he gave me the pcv bit. I just wanted to get e few responses about it first. Keep it up though. On my rings.. when i first got the car from my grandmother < who never drove it about 60 mph> back in 98 i drove it and it was great.. well it was last year this time that the motor seized o my way from Peachtree ga to macon. When i got it back last Nov i had the entire engine rebuilt. Would it be possible for my rings to be bad already? By the way...Anybody know someone selling a manual tranny for 89 - 92 camaro preferred Z28. I've killed the auto in mine and im lookin to switch when i build up an engine to shove into my baby. thanx.

Sure, the rings could go bad anytime. Anything is possible. It depends on the manufacturer and engine builder. It's inlikely though.

The auto-manual trans swap is not an easy task. Nor is it cheap. You need the trans, shifter, pedals, flywheel, pressure plate and clutch, the entire hydraulic setup, and a number of other misc items. It also requires a lot of fabrication. You would be better off buying a built 700R4 and better converter. The price wouldn't be too much more, and it bolts right in! Besides, even the WC T5's usually don't hold up to built up motors.

I know it wont be cheap thats ok
and i know it'll be hard but two of my friends have managed it on a camaro and a Trans Am. I just prefer a manual.

Actually I was looking to do the same thing a little over a year ago, except with a T56. But the cost blew me out of the water, so I dropped in a built auto and am very happy!

So what ever happened with the problem? And good luck on the T5 swap
