old heads/intake gone, new ones ready to go...but...

ive just gone to a totally new setup for my 383 stroker and am having a difficult time selecting a cam to go with the new intake/heads. i was basically wondering what some of the guys on here would recommend in terms of specs for the new cam.

ill try and list all the relevant mods, and a few things of note about the car. first its primarily a street car but will see the track several times a season. in other words, i dont want to be stalling at lights or when backing out of my driveway. second im hoping to make 500+ hp/tq on just motor.

the motor is a 383 stroker with canfield alum heads 2.05/1.60 215cc chamber, a tpis miniram II intake, 58mm tb, 42# injectors, accel dfi and msd 6al/distributor/coil.

the compression will be around 10.5:1. i wanted to go solid roller so TPIS recommended their 700-701 solid roller cam:

Intake Exhaust
Advertised duration 278 278
Duration at .050 242 242
Gross lift .572 .572
Lobe separation 112

one guy from TPIS has this cam in a 406 in his vette and says its quite streetable...but i am concerned this may be more cam than i need. its going to be a custom ground cam, but can anyone help me out deciding how big or small of a cam to go with? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

oh and if anyone needs any more info about the setup to help me decide, let me know.

I agree with the guys at TPIS. I haven't driven a stroker with that exact same cam but have built/driven quite a few with very similar cams and they were all very streetable. On of which was very similar to your setup, with the exception of AFR heads.

However, my goal with that build and that cam would be to make 550 hp at the motor. That said, you're overshooting your goal by 50hp and could get by with a much smaller camshaft. Depends on the heads but a cam in the 230-236 range would probably suit you better. All said, that combination should be good for ~450 at the rear wheels.

great, so im on the right track. that helps man, thanks.

i want to make 500 plus hp/tq. as long as im over 500 ill be happy, but the more the merrier

basically i want to take full advantage of my heads/intake, or make as much power as i can, and still have it be a solid daily driver (well, if not daily then a few times a week at least).

General cam recommendations should be made in a General Technical forum. I will make a guess and move this to 3rd Gen Tech. Can you please make a sig so that people know what year/car/engine/etc you are working with? Thanks.

I have the same combo as you, and I'm using a comp custom grind 230-236 .575 .578 lift with 1.5 rockers, .604 .608 with 1.6's 114 lsa, 110 lca.

A friend has the TPIS ZZX and just ran 12.03 @ 118 on street tires. He has to run a vacuum canister though. Vaccum is around 10-12" at idle, and mine is around that also. Idle is good, driveability is good.
