Synthetic won't hurt, just cost more. If your motor is stock, I wouldn't pay the extra money.

i've heard that synthetic is thinner which can cause an engine 2 have leaks where it hasn't leaked in the past

How can synthetic be thinner? 5W30 is 5W30 whether synth or mineral. I had a 91 190E 2.6 Benz that used mineral and I switched to synth and it never leaked a drop on the floor and didn't use any more than normal. In fact, the most wasted oil was when I spilt it.

It might have more detergents in it and clean out the sludge and now it leaks but on any engine in good condition, I have never see it leak. MB uses 0W40. In 2000 they switched to 0W40 for their cars that didn't have it and that never caused a problem.

In turbo apps, I would use synth but for your situation, no. My car gets beat on enough so I use it for the extra bit of protection. Besides LPE and Callaway both recommend it.
