Post O.K. no LT1 cam, what cams are you running.

Alright guys. My ride sits with a TPI 350 resting between the fenders. Keith Black flat tops and headers. AFPR and a dead gear (will be fixed) It's also a 5 speed. If I were to put some new Z28 springs in it than what cam can I put in it without seriously compromising the idle. I want to put in a cam and I want to do it soon. I also want to see a good improvement with a bad *** sound. Just give me some specs and part numbers if you can. I'd like to just use a semi bad *** cam with stock valve springs and lifters and such. Of course all the valve springs and lifters will be replaced with no ones but I'd like to just get stock replacement parts.

I'm thinking a ZZ4 or LT4 Hot cam. $175 new from SDPC, both are proven camshafts in EFI cars. You'll want the ZZ4 cam if you want a smoother idle, the LT4 Hot if you are looking to add more mods in the future and make more power.

I'm using a Comp Cams cc306 grind with 1.6 ratio rockers. Idle quality wasn't an issure for me as I have a daily driver to get me to work and back. I got that cam because of a suggestion from a friend that was running a cc305 in his 350 car.

Question

You didn't mention if yours started as a LB9 w/5-speed or an L98 and you swapped out the 700r4. Depending on the situation a cam change might require a prom change, too.

When i started moddinng my original 305 I installed TF G1 heads, Crane's mild 2032HR with 214/220 .452/.465 lift, and an AFPR. It didn't require a prom change. The AFPR was enough with the 19lb injectors.

When i swapped in the ZZ4 shortblock, the added cubic inches and larger injectors required a prom change. My original LB9 chip ran, but the gas mileage went down and it was running rich despite turning down the fuel pressure.

So depending on what you have already done to the car may have an effect on on the cam swap.

You didnt mention what heads you have. If they're stock, the largest cam you can use is the CompuCam 2032 like mentioned above. The ZZ4 cam and LT4 HOT cam have too much lift to work with stock heads, without machine work.

The heads are stock and I would like to avoid machine work. The car came with a L98 and a 700R4. I swaped in the stick beacuse I've always wanted a stick in my camaro

Then your biggest choice is the CompuCam 2032, as mentioned. Stay under .470" lift with stock heads and you'll be ok.
