not happy enough with fresh engine cam selection.
Just recently finished installing a fresh 350 and I am already considering a cam or intake change. Engine includes speed pro forged flat tops, comp cams magnum 280 (230 adv.and .480in/ex.) comps magnum stamped roller tip rockers, summits cast iron heads 67cc 2.02 and 1.60 ss valves 165cc runners, edelbrock torker 2 intake, holley 750 vac secondaries, MSD street fire distributor. I have a new 292 magnum cam i am considering. The engine is not as responsive on low end as i wished for could this be due to the single plane intake? How much would a four hole spacer under the carb help? Will the bigger cam worsen this condition? I am currently using a th200r4 tranny and I need a higher stall speed for sure.
Most of its in the intake. Edelbrocks Torker series does nothing well, and the Torker 2 is by far the worst of them. No torque, no midrange, no HP, and poor throttle response. Go with a Performer RPM air gap, you won't be disappointed!
The 292 is a proven performer but will make low RPM power and response worse, even with a better intake. But then again with a decent size stall and proper gearing it shouldnt be that noticable.

flattops, 67 cc heads... I'd say about 9.7-9.8??!?!? shouldnt be that big a deal if i'm right, but the cam mnfr will let you know compression ranges, fit in on the high side for better performance, but if you want bottom end go with something in the 210-220 range at .050" if you stall it and gear it then fit the proposed power curve to the stall
i think the 292 is a little to big for the heads unless you open them up a bit. they are a good replacement head but are comparable to camel humps. (sorry old timers but they sucked). they can be ported to get decent flow. the small runners make for great low end torque. the larger valves do hurt the low end torque. so you are really in the middle of what you want. port the heads. switching the intake to a performer rpm would really help, if you get good gears (3.42 or 3.73) and a decent stall (2500-3000)you could get away with a victor jr and a larger cam. i would recommend a comp extreme with a split duration ( more on the exhaust side due to the heads)
make sure the carb is adjusted right because the combo you choose could be just as bad if the fuel and spark are not coming in where they need to.

I would switch camshafts and intakes, I have never been a fan of single pattern camshafts. Go with a proven camshaft like the Comp Extreme energy series and a Dual plane Performer RPM intake manifold. What is your gearing like? I would suggest the comp XE274 assuming you have a decent converter and gearing.
My gears are 3.73, and compression is 9.8:1. However I have not purchased a stall converter yet. I would like to stay 2500 or less which is a little small for the 292 cam i had considered. Changing the intake may be my simplest solution and go with the dual plane performer rpm for now and maybe upgrade to the xe274 cam later.
yes i meant to say air gap but left it out. can you suggest a good porting service i can ship the heads and intake (AIR GAP) to there arent any machine shops in my area that do performance porting> What about golen engines?
For the porting heads, you can't beat http://www.eportworks.com/index.htm
I'm running a 3500 stall with 3.73 gears and still get 20mpg on the highway.
