new motor overheated

Well i was driving and the car began to feel stumbly...then it stalled, started back up but ticked really loud and then i started to see smoke. So i pulled into a gas station and saw the overflow resvoir was completely full and coolant was being forced outta the cap was shot all over my engine. Wtf is going on?..the thermostat is new, the water pump is too. The fans come on at 185(both of them)...anybody have any idea would it could be?

Sounds like a head gaskets. This was white smoke you saw right?

no it was just the smoke for the engine bay from coolant hitting the header. I just went back and started it and drove home..runs fine and now that resvoir is completely empty (when just an hour ago it was shooting coolant out of it because it was so full..

I'd bet on the head gaskets. The stumbling was probably from coolant getting into the combustion chambers. It is most likely headgaskets. Check your oil and see if it looks milky, which would indicate coolant in the oil.

I would verify that the t-stat is working. Fill a pan with water, drop the t-stat in there, and then boil the water and verify that the t-stat opens.

I kind of agree with Sabre on this one.

I'll offer another set of ieas though too. Overheating can be caused by an air pocket in the coolant where the engine coolant wasn't circulating. I had this happen once. Conversely, are you SURE the fans are coming on? If your computer has not been reprogrammed the fans will come on at 200* and 227* if I remember correctly what was in my factory chip when I pulled the image off it and looked at it in the tuning software. If your engine is a modded motor it can easily generate more heat with a higher compression ratio and at those temps, its hard to cool down without a good matched/tuned cooling system.

Re: new motor overheated

If its not pouring white smoke out the exhaust and theres no evidence of oil in the crankcase then my bet is on the air pocket in the cooling system.

-Completely drain the cooling system
-Take off the thermostat housing and fill the engine with coolant and then reinstall the thermostat and housing.
-When I had this problem,I took the upper hose off the thermo. end and put coolant in the hose, and then filled the radiator.
Then I just ran the car untill operating temp and topped it off.

Hope that helps
