New

I'm new here! Having a problem with an 88 305 throttle body motor! After it sits a while you start it up and it wants to die ocasionly! If you turn key off and back on instead of restarting imidiately it will run fine. I'm lost. I have 2 daughters and I bought an 88 & 89 for them. Guess who is the mechanic!

Welcome Dad.

How many miles are on the car? How does it run? How is the fuel mileage? (good mileage can be a sign of a clogged fuel filter). If the car has over 60k on it, I'd do a fuel filter anyhow (cheap insurance).

It could be an IAC (Idle Air Control) in the throttle body that is dirty. It is a "valve" that the computer uses to control the idle. They are known to get full of carbon and cause idle problems. You can usually unscrew it and clean under it with carb cleaner and a popcicle stick (you don't want to damage the machined surface, so a wooden stick works well). If the car runs ok when it's moving but won't idle, I'd grab a service manual and start there.

Also, check the timing, air filter, plugs, cap and rotor, etc. It could be alot of things, but that is my best guess (sight unseen).

It only happen once in a while. It just dies. Put new ignition moduel on because it was all the time. That helped! Now it only does it after you drive it a while and then it sits for twenty or thirty minutes. New throttle body gasket didn't help. After you get it running it runs like a champ. New fuel filter this morning. If you turn the ignition back off and then start it it runs fine. It's like something reset!

Sounds like a heat soak problem of some kind. That would make me think that ignition module is still bad or the pickup coil has a problem (rare, but not impossible). Hmmm. Unless it is a computer issue?

IAC sticking? Doubt it, but I've heard some crazy stuff those things can cause.

Or a bad connection in the harness that is causing it to "stick" when it looses contact briefly? Maybe the torque of starting it is "fixing" a loose connection or a plug that has the contacts smashed "open" and is not a good fit? Possiblilties.

Yep, the ignitions modules in these cars have a nack for going bad and when they do, they tend to fail when hot. once they cool down, they act fine, until they get hot again.

Bad fuel pump possible? I was having a similar problem with my 2.8, where I would start it, It would run for a few, and then die. I changed out the pump and haven't had a problem since.

Sounds like it could be the filter to me, a friend of mine had that problem, it took a while to get his car started, but once it was going it drove normally, turned out to be a fuel filter. Its a $6 part, it its more than 20,000 miles old you shoudl be replacing it anyway.

Bought it down at N.A.P.A. They had two kinds,... USA or Asian. I bought USA! The air temp. sensor in the air cleaner didn't look right. I unhooked the vacum line and plugged the port on throttle body. Drove it all day yesterday and no problems. But like I say it only happens once in a while now!
