Need some major advice

Just moved down to cali with my camaro. It's got and L98 w/ ported and polished heads, SLP cam, TPIS big mouth base, large tube runners and 52MM throttle body, Edelbrock shorties, and a lingenfelter stall. However, it's got low oil pressure, and on the move down to cali the tranny went out, leaving me with only 1st and 2nd gear. Is it worth it to swap out the block and tranny, or should i just part it out? I'm thinking about selling it as-is. How much do you guys think i could get for it? After the move, i don't have the resources needed for an engine swap.

For the low oil pressure just check your oil and if it's low, add some, problem solved. If not then there's other problems. And about your transmission, I'm assuming it's automatic seeing they never put sticks in 350's. If you were to sell it "as-is" you wouldn't get much with a blown tranny. Just get a new transmission and you'll be set, you don't need a whole new engine or anything.

OK, so not having the actual tools to swap out the tranny will probably cost me....$1500+ for the job + tranny itself. I honestly doubt i'd be able to get at least 1500 more just for having the tranny swapped out. And yes, the engine components are causing the low oil pressure.

It should be pretty easy to find a tranny at a junk yard or on ebay, You have a 700r4, you can probably get one for $200-$300 then find a greasy little corner shop and they will probably install it for another $400-$500, I am east coast so the price may be a bit off. An 88 Iroc in good condition goes for between 3,500 and 5,000 on ebay usually. One with a blown tranny you'd be lucky to get 2,000, so I'd swap it.

What part of Cali did you move? What kind of Camaro? I might possibly buy it from you. Let me know.

How is the intake/cam/head stuff causing low oil pressure?

OK, I'm not sure if components was the right word.....Anyway, the engine itself, i think tired main bearings causes this, is having low oil pressure.

I'm located in Atascadero CA, right by San Luis Obispo. The car is an 88 IROC-Z.

Ooooh, makes more sense now. Is the pressure low all the time?

No, only at low RPM's when the temp is up.

How low? 20psi at idle with an engine temp of 210 is acceptable. Thats what mine runs currently and I am about a quart low, or however much drained onto my garage floor when adjusting the rockers.

That's about what mine hovers at when warmed up and I'm about half a quart low right now.

How low is low?

Mine's at about 15. I was always under the impression that it should be at 30....

Re: Need some major advice

According to the GM maintenance manual anthing under 20 is suspect. It should be 20psi or higher I believe. Anything under that is usually a sign of the main bearings, rod bearings, and cam bearings going bad.

How long do engines generally last once the bearings start going bad?
