Need input on how to go 12's

I need to know what kind of parts to put on my 87 IROC-Z to go mid to high 12's in the quarter. I know that i will need to do a head and cam package, stall coverter, intake, headers and what ever else you can request to do to the car.
The car has a 350 TPI bored 30 over along with KB pistons with a 10 1/2 to 1 compression, a SLP cam, twin 52 mm throttle body, 373 gears, a shift kit and MSD ignition all around including a 6AL ignition box and Borla exhaust with a high flow cat. I would like to keep the car naturally asperated, and just like any other person i have a budget of about 4 grand to work with. If anyone can please help me out with the best parts to use and the specs if possibe it is greatly appreciated. Thanks for all of the help.

Seems to me that you have all the bases covered.

If you want advice on a good combination I would recommend you get Fast Burn heads and a Stealth Ram intake with a ZZ409 camshaft. A 2500- 3000 stall along with 3.73 gears and suspension mods will get you low 12's. Spray it and low 11's will be attainable.

heres a proven combo for ya:

Vortec heads,
Xe274 cam
Edelbrock RPM intake.
Holley or demon 750~ carb.

Thats if you want to go old school and cheap. This setup can be had for about 1100 bucks, and it proven to make 420+ hp. Not too bad if you ask me.

Out of curiosity what are you running now. That seemed like a pretty stout set-up. I think you could be running pretty hard with just a cam and stall convertor.

Right now in the quarter i'm running 14.0 @ 97 mph spinning my tires all the way through first and half of second gear, I ran that time on a 95 degree day and my cars timing was out and the fans were not kicking on. So i can honestly say that i really don't know what i would run if i got traction and with my car being dialed in, your guess is as good as mine as of this point

Take a look at the May 2003 Car Craft. They have a good article on how to make a TPI car go 12s. Hope that helps.

What heads do you have? What intake as well? My combo runs high 12's and should be mid 12's with a better driver.

Get yourself some trickflow heads or equivilent and an aftermarket intake and runners, and you should be running 12's. Dont forget you need sticky tires, too.

You need traction. I have a Paxton on my 5.7 92 Z and on stock tires I can't get better than a 13.5 @ 106. When I put drag radials on I got a 12.7 @ 108. I can burn the tires through first and second, so my power isn't too different from yours. The engine is stock but I have an SLP exhaust. If you can get your 60 ft times below 2 seconds you should have a high to mid 12 second car. Your other mods. seem like they are making the power you want. Good luck.

Right now on the car I have the stock heads but they had a 5 angle valve job done, I also had the edelbrock base intake and the high flow runners, but those had to come off due to a crack in the casting that was allowing anti freeze to go into the cylinder. So right now all of the intake is stock except for the throttle body. I also have a TPIS fuel regulator and a ported plendum, and just like every other person in this world i have K&N filters. I already know for a fact that i'm going to put on a Holley Stealth Ram or a TPIS mini ram for the intake along with some 24 pound injectors. But for the heads that i'm going to be running is not determined yet, that is why i'm asking the third gen die hards for some help, to help me make the decision. Thanks for all the input guys and keep it coming.

Your setup is EXACTLY what mine is minus the bigger Throttle Body.

I am putting on the HSR (Holley Stealth Ram) and 24# injectors along with some new suspension stuff.... but other than that I have what you do or comparable.

Ohh, what convertor are you gonna run? Mine is a 2400 TCI. Also, I plan on using the stock heads with 2.02 1.60 valves and port work., screw in studs, roller rockers, etc this year.

I plan for 12's. I ran a 13.7 @ 99.3 this year on an 80* day.
