Need a Cam!!!!!

Alright, I have an 1988 Camaro with a 350 TPI, auto, and 3.23 gears. Right now i'm looking at getting the Xtreme Energy Comp Cam 230 236 .510 .520 110 degrees. I'm planning on porting the stock heads and installing Comp Cam double value springs with up to .600 lift and some Comp Cam Pro Magnum Roller Rockers 1.6 ratio. I will also be installing the Holley StealthRam intake by the end of the summer. Also will be installing a B&M 2400 stall torque converter. Will mainly be using this car for the strip but some street use. Tell me what you think about this cam. I need some help.
I also plan on installing 3.73 gears here in the near future.

Sounds to me like too much cam for stock heads (even ported). Maybe get it and run it with 1.5's till you can get better heads, but even heavily-ported L98 heads are going to choke that cam. You're talkin about .544/.555 lift at the valve.....they just don't flow that well. Not to mention potential piston/valve interference.

i was going to buy that cam but then the guy who is macining my heads said that its a large cam.you will need new springs the heads will need to be machined to fit springs properly, all new valves because the spring sits higher 10 degree keepers. he is porting and polishing my l98 heads now and i decided for all the work that the heads need you might as well get new ones.so for now i wend with the XR258HR to put in my 383 lots of people say it is too small but wait until they see it go.i talked with him for at least an hour about cams and he said that its the best one until i get heads

Check in the Michigan forum. A local guy has a Cam Motion custom grind for sale. 242/251'ish dur. with .570/.580" lift I beleive(with 1.6 rockers). He made good power with it and PORTED LT1 heads. 560 HP at 7000RPM All out of a stock bottom ended 350 cube motor.... makes me wanna puke that's so sick

holy smoke if want to make excellent power with that cam and intake i would look at using the Dart Pro 1 alum heads (215cc 64cc and 1.437 springs) i have a set getting ready for my motor in my iroc but my friend has them on his sbc with that cam made 510 flywheel horsepower but his has a 750 BG Demmon carb and a victor jr intake. also you should look at chevy high performance's twister project and see the hp they got

If your going to keep the tpi you'll need a cam with a 114 or better LS.

Why would i have to have a 114 lobe separation. Why wouldn't 110 work.

You need the bigger lobe seperation for vaccum puposes. I don't think the TPI set up runs very well with low vacuum.

But about the size. I don't see anything wrong with going a little over .500 inch lift. From every flow chart I have ever seen on stock heads they reach peak flow at .500. Now .600 may be pushing it but even then you only hit the max lift for a short time. What's wrong with using a cam that will get you to max flow lift and keeping it there a little bit.

I am currently running the XR269HR cam with stock heads on my 350 and wish I would have gone one step higher. It has .496 inch lift on intake and .503 on exhaust. 218 duration at .050. It idles very mildly and my gas mileage is respectable.

Now I did replace the TPI with a carb. Even the little cam I am running will be choked by the stock TPI. That cam likes to pull to 5500 rpm easy. So anyway, if you are gonna get the stealth ram my opinion is one the size of the 276HR would be fine. Just search harder for one that is 112deg lobe seperation. I am pretty sure comp cams makes that. The put it under their computer friendly cams. My XR269HR is 112.

How about this cam:
276/281 224/230 .503/.510 112 degrees
It talks about having a aftermarket chip but when i talked to Hypertech they said i wouldn't be able to use their chip if i was running nitrous. Does anyone know where i could get a chip that would work.

That is the cam I would go with if I had it to do over again. But like Sleepbyu I would go with the 110 since I am running a carb also. If you are gonna keep the GM Computer set-up it would be a really good idea to look into the software and hardware for burning chips. It may cost a little more than buying a chip, but you would be getting much more value from it. The software out there for burning is like using a spreadsheet from what I've seen. I don't know if this site has info on it but I do know thirdgen.org does.

Another option would be to get ahold of an Ed Wright chip. I have heard nothing but good things about his chips. http://www.fastchip.com/
