My 305 TBI Needs Power!

I am 18 years old, still working for minimum wage, so Im low on funds. I have a 1992 RS with the 305 TBI in it. It runs strong and all, but im sick of pulling up on V6 Mustangs that can take me. I just bought an LT1 cam, and with it I am putting in LT4 valve springs, a chip(gotta figure this out too), and the Edlebrock Performer TBI intake. For me, this is a big thing, but I was wondering, what other mods can i do to my car thatll make me go faster, but won't leave me in serious debt.

Get either the stock air intake system off a '82-'84 305 carb motor, which would be the dual snorkel or get an Open Element. Both of these are much better than stock and get you better airflow. Also, you need to get rid of the stock cylinder heads.....either go with Vortec heads or World S/R Torquer 305 heads. Then you may want to get some headers and 3" catback. Also, a set of gears will help you out a lot. I'm currently saving to get a posi-lock to make my rear-end positive traction and get a set of 3.73s.

Hope this helps some.

They used an LB9 car in the article, not an L03 car. The 87 firebird had better induction, was rated between 20 and 45 more horsepower and is an all around better platform to mod to begin with. Chevy high performance swapped pulleys on a newer TBI 350 chevy truck and the results were pitiful.

Your next best mod for your money is gears. A local guy at my track runs a 91 RS and runs 15's with 3.73's, posi and S/R torquer heads.

You can get a cat back system etc, but a cheaper route would be to get a cut out and put it before your cat. That is if you don't mind the noise and can get by w/out the law messing with ya. Or you could get a used 3" cat back off ebay or from someone. Check out your local F-body type club. Personally I don't think there is a huge difference from a pressure bent system and a mandrel system. Maybe 5 hp difference, and you can get a complete system installed for less than a mandrel system that you still have to get installed.

Also the advice on the Vortec heads I don't think would work on the 305. Their 64CC chambers will kill your compression ratio. Stock 305 heads are 58CC. The torquer S/R heads for a 305 is ~$500 or so.

For cheap grunt...gears. They make a huge difference in any engine, but make your speedo off and decrease fuel milage some. Get gears that'll put your car running in the power band of whatever cam you have. Later on get a converter that'll match your cam profile for more power on the launch.

Also like has been said. Free up airflow in and out of your engine. Also, make sure you have good traction. If you're spinning off the line thats wasted torque that could be putting you in front of the competition. DON'T GET TIRES BECAUSE THEY ARE CHEAP!!! Get some tires that'll grab. Look into some rear suspension mods too.

I also don't know about the LT1 cam. Any of you 305 guys know??? I know they do well in the 350 but not too sure about the 305. Its easy to overcam those engines.

Even with mods, there will be 6 cyl cars that'll pull ya. Not to mention those factory turbo charged 4 cyls. Watch out for an SRT-4 or WSX. Just look at it reallisticly. You have a 16 sec car stock, with the stuff you have and cheap mods you'll get in the 15's maybe high 14's. V6 Stangs, Grand Prix GT's, Grand Am GT's, 3.8L F-bodies all run in the low to high 15s stock.

I saw the article, and from first hand experience I can tell you that pulleys will not give you 17 HP.

Headers and 3" cat will give you the most HP gain. The stock induction (modified) and stock TBI will provide enough airflow well into the 14s. Check my car in sig.

Ran 14.7s @ 93 mph on the stock cam and 14.48 @ 96.28 mph with a L98 cam. Swapping the cam with REQUIRE a custom chip to run well and make power so keep that in mind before you spend 15 hrs or so swapping that cam.

Here's a link to my dyno graphs comparing the stock cam vs. L98 cam. dyno graph

If you really like the car and intend on keeping it, I'd save up for a nice 350.

Lets put it this way, my stock 350HO crate engine in front of a turbo 350 with a 3000 stall, 3.73's and posi on radial T/A's with a demon 650 carb and a performer intake for vortecs (not even an rpm) went 12.88@105.X and 12.93 @ 106.1mph.
A guy with my same crate motor with the same gearing underneath a 670cfm aftermarket TBI unit ran 13.9 @100 mph. Obviously he may have some tuning issues to deal with, but TBI has never been big on my list for 1/4 mile stuff.

I think most people pick up a used carb intake and use an adapter b/c it's a lot cheaper, then they also have a carb intake for when they give up on custom tuning and switch to a carb.
