More 3rd Gen questions

I appreciate how nice you guys are in this forum.

88 Camaro with a L98 swapped in. Car has some problems....

1. Small leak coming from Oil pan seal
2. Speedo cable leaking tranny fluid
3. Alittle white smoke on startup - Needs valve seal's?
4. Tilt steering wheel stuck - Says gear is stripped
5. Rear hatch electric motor broken - Cord holding down rear hatch

Give me an estimate on how easy it is to fix those things. He only wants 900 dollars so i'll probably buy it. Thanks again

I know the rear hatch can be a pain in the ***. Also it is HARD to distinguish an L98 from an LB9 visually, so be wary that it may not be what it seems.

91,

I just watched your car video in your sig. You're one crazy ****.

I'm also not really worried about what engine it is. Just worried about the problems. Engine's coming right out anyway.

LOL, that wasn't even me, that was right before I bought this car. 900$ is damn cheap, if you have the know-how then that might be worth your 900$. Unfortunately with cheap used cars there may also be some expensive problem lurking beneath the surface.

Are you talking $900 for the convertable in the earlier post? Thats gotta be worth $5500. If not any Z is a good deal at $900. I've replaced rear hatch motors. No prob. You might be able to fix yours with a gear set. Try Hawks 3rd gen. The only hard part might be the tilt steering. Keep us posted on your motor project. Good luck.

Re: More 3rd Gen questions

1. Small leak coming from Oil pan seal
You must pin point the leak first, the pan gets wet if it leaks anywhere above also. Most pan gasket were silicon rubber, try snugging the bolts first.
2. Speedo cable leaking tranny fluid
Again, gets loose with age, snug it first, then replace "O"ring, take your old one to the store, should match it up for a couple of bucks.
3. Alittle white smoke on startup - Needs valve seal's?
Yep, valve seals, common after years of heat. Follow instructions in a manual, takes about 3-4 hours. Get a valve-spring-compressor that mounts to the rocker stud, and use a magnetic pick-up tool to pull the locks.
4. Tilt steering wheel stuck - Says gear is stripped
Never seen that, many of them loose. They can be retightened, replacing it isn't difficult. Under the lower dash cover is to bolts holding it to the dash, a couple at the floor, and a pinch nut at the gear. And ofcourse the electrical connects.
5. Rear hatch electric motor broken - Cord holding down rear hatch
If you SLAM it it will shut. I'd check contacts first, and wiring for voltage at the latch. There's also a relay back there. If all else fails and voltages check out, replace the small motor.
(I bought my '86 T-Top, TA with a bad tranny and no center console, bad hood/trunk lifts, bad tires, more than a couple of leaks...for $500...fixed..now I'd probably ask $5K for it.)

Then why do you care about the smoke on startup or the oil pan leak?

Also, I spent a lot of time trying to repair an old rear hatch motor and eventually did after spending several hours reading through wiring diagrams. After doing it myself, I would recommend just buying a new one off of ebay for like $25.
