Re: Headers

you got a pretty much stock 350?if so pretty much any header will work, primary size wont matter too much.most will have 1 5/8s primary, others have 1 1/2 or 1 3/4,but either way any will be better than stock manifolds.do you need ceramic coated?i doubt it,but painted ones wont last as long.you want to maintain emissions?if you want basic headers all the name brands ok,summit even sells their own for camaros.collector sizes vary, some use a stock style, others use 2 1/2 inch or even 3 inch collectors.again any of the above will be better than stock on a stock engine.y pipe?u wanna get a new one?some headers require a new pipe ,meaning more coin.youll have to ask manufactor if they compatable. i know edelbrocks are.some folk dont like them but for a stock application theyre a good affordable no hassle set up.retain all emissionand accessories.

Re: Headers

i really dont care about emission or if they are shiny or not, i just want a good pair that will performe and give the engine good flow and sound. i will probably get a new y pipe and ditch the cat and maybe along with a new exhaust since the one on there now sucks

I have Hooker Super Competition long tubes, they rock but ground clearance SUCKS.

Re: Headers

Edlebrock's headers and y-pipe are really the best alternative to SLP's,but that's my opinion. That's if you're going to stick with the single exhaust to the muffler. You could go with full length headers if you're ditching the cat.Any choice you make get a coated header. This not only prevents rust but also insulates the engine bay to heat.

Re: Headers

For your application I would recommend the Hooker competition shorties. They are a good combination of cost, performance and ease of installation. Whatever you choose, don't go too big on the primary tube side. Anything bigger than 1 5/8" will hurt your low end performance.

Re: Headers

I have SLP's and ground clearance isn't a problem at all. Following the SLP's is a high flow cat and Flowmaster. SOUNDS GREAT. But the SLP headers will run around 500. Goodluck in your search, Chaz

Re: Headers

Edelbrock makes a pair, which I am having installed now, that is just for the TPI motor. I have an 87 350 L98. It is part # EDL-68723 at Summitracing.com. I'm not sure how much SLP's are but these are $399 and come with all hardware as well as a new Y-pipe. Edelbrock also claims a full second off your o-60 times. I'm also installing a new motor so I wont be able to tell you how they fit yet, but they are supposed to be a direct fit. The headers are ceramic coated for heat reduction under the hood. They also use your emmission equipment so you can still pass the state test if you have one.

Re: Headers

I also have a full 3" exhaust and 80 series Flowmaster muffler #43083 with 3" inlet offset and dual 2.5" outlets that mounts behind the rear axle like the stock one. It sound good.

Re: Headers

thanks for all the imput guys, its really helpful
i think my best choice would be to go with the edlebrock headers since they make them for tpi and i need a place for a 02 sensor
doesn anyone know about the gmmg chambered exhaust? i think it sounds pretty good but a little pricey so i thought i might try making my own with justtubing and 2 chambered mufflers

Re: Headers

All of the choices mentioned here can be used for TPI and have O2 bungs and air tub holes if you want them.

What do you really want out of the headers, performance improvement or more noise?

If the former, go for Hooker Super Comp shorties p/n 2055 (summit HOK-2055HKR).

If the latter, get a different muffler.

Re: Headers

If you dont want SLP's then Hooker is the best choice. Edelcrock is down at the bottom of the list, in my opinion.
