Question marbles in a metal pan

Ever since I got my camaro, there's been a nasty rattling noice at idle. I could never put my finger on it, but I thought it had to be something on the serpentine belt. So the other day, I took my car to the shop to get a starter re-installed that they screwed up. They told me it was the water pump bearings. So a couple days ago, I replaced the water pump.

THERE'S THAT DAMN RATTLING AGAIN!!!! whenever I idle, it sounds like a bunch of marbles being rolled around in a metal pan.....It also definitely sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine bay where all of the pulley's are.

My girl's 89 RS has the exact same noice and so do a couple of my other friends' with thirdgens. Anyone got any experience with this?!

Thanks!

Nope Brad, he's from over here

Chris, if I'd known , I would have checked it out when i was up there last time

check the tensioner, take the belt off and spin all the pulleys, they should all spin smooth, if one feels rough when you turn it, repace it(the component)

Once the belt is off, before you test any accessories, start the engine. If the noise goes away, you know it's coming from the accessory drive system. If the noise is still present, start saving

Wow, my old 89 RS 305 did that same noise! I always thought it was coming from the waterpump, but i changed it 3 times and still the noise. It did it for years and I could never figure it out. Never got worse though. Almost sounded like the timing belt area though. Might wanna look into that.
My mom bought the car new in 88. Wow, this thread just brought back a flood of memories. I sold the car in 02, damn me!
I hope you get it figured out!

good point, if the noise is still there after the belt is off, it is most likely the timing chain hitting the cover
