Manifold-back exhaust system?

I have a '91 Z28 and was wondering if anyone makes a good exhaust system that replaces everything from the manifolds back. Im not looking for something with and offroad Y....I would like one that has a new catalytic converter...

I cant seem to find one anywhere...they are all offroad systems or catbacks...

Have you guys seen the crap exhaust it comes with? Jeez its like they just stuck a couple straws to the manifolds, slapped on a tiny converter, stuffed a restrictive muffler back there and called it a day.

If theres not one that includes a cat, whats a good, cheap catback that doesnt require welding? Not super loud but def. not quiet either...

thanks-
Chris

I don't think there is a kit for it you would have to get the parts yourself. I would reccommed the Hooker Catback and any 3" cat will do. Just have your favorite local exhaust shop weld it all up for you.

Re: Manifold-back exhaust system?

well that sucks...i didnt think anyone made one but I figured I'd ask anyways...

The problems with the stock Y pipe, BEFORE the cat....its soooo small in diameter...theres got to be some power in changing that out to 3".

You think its worth it to go 3" before the cat?

AFAIK mine only has one cat...can you confirm this without me crawling under my car? Its lowered so its a bitch to jack it up and it scrapes when using my Rhino Ramps..

heres an illustration..

manifold]============[CAT]======[muffler]
........................;
manifold]=====~"

the pipes before the cat will still be small if i go with a catback...

I dont see any way of replacing the pre-cat pipes without buying flanges and having a muffler shop weld it up....and the muffler shop I go to dont have a mandrel bender yet.... I like the guy and I like going to the same place because I get a better deal every time..ony reason I dont go somewhere where they have a mandrel bender..) If someone at least had the pre-cat pipes with flanges on them ready to weld to a Y pipe that would be cool....

thanks

Re: Manifold-back exhaust system?

Buy your own mandrel bends and have the shop fabricate the new Y pipe out of 2.5" or 3" material. 2.5" should be good for anything but a big cubic inch or high powered setup. The dual 2.5" pipes routed to a 3" or 3.5" single pipe, a cat if you want one, and then an off the shelf cat back system or again...buy your own mandrel bends in the size needed and have it custom made. Choosing your own muffler is nice also.

I reccomend it because I just did this with 4" material. I bought 4" mandrel bends from Chassis Shop,a 4" Race Flowmaster,a 4" turndown, and 8 feet(overkill) of 4" pipe. Now I needs to get it cut and welded up by a local shop. Goodluck!

I would also get headers if you are gonna do all this. Might as well increase the flow as much as possible.

How about getting a 1 5/8 SLP headers with single cat, 3 in SLP exhaust and a Random Technologies high flow cat? With that, you can call it a day.

Yea then you just do it all at once and don't have to worry about your exhaust system ever again!

yeah...until the LS1 goes in......

I dunno, I have some cash on hand and I think I might just buy a little Honda or something as a daily driver while I figure out what I want to do with the '91 Z...

If I had a daily driver like that then all my other cars could go under the knife indefinately.....thats why Im thinking about the LS1 swap...I love my 4th gen, so I figure why not update the 'ol '91? Either that or a 350 swap with a full rebuild...heads/cam/LT1 intake or SuperRam conversion....

Heck the 383 kits are sooo cheap right now, thats still a good option...
