MAF screen removal

What's the best way to remove the screens on my MAF to get better flow? I don't want to screw up because a replacement MAF is like $200. Thanks.

easiest way is DONT. I tried to do that with my Iroc & my car started up fine then Died on me with in a min. Of course I dont know what kind of set up you have. I have a TPI 350.
Thank god I was using my husbands Iroc one with the screens out & I still had my Stock one untouched.

The TPI engine has a touchy system. If you take the screens off you will allow to much air to get in to your engine & the Fuel/ Air Ratio would be unbalanced. The only way I can think of this working right (by taking off the screens) is to work with your Fuel intake as well. This I think can be achived by either larger Fuel injectors or a adjestable Fuel pressure regulator.

If I am wrong please someone correct me.

The easy way to do it is take a grinder and grind the end down to the screen. Then pop the screen out. The car will run fine as long as you don't hit the wires inside the MAF sensor. I have had mine out for 13 years with no problem. The ecm will adjust the air/fuel mixture. Make sure you clean the inside of the MAF when done grinding. Again make sure not to damage the wires inside the MAF sensor.

I've done two TPI cars 87 T/A and a 88 T/A, both 5.0 and never had a problem. Just don't touch or cut the wires inside. Just my .02 cents

Should be a warning label on all MAF's "REMOVE SCREENS AT OWN RISK". Just a old 3rd Gen performance" MYTH" with NO PROVEN BENIFIT.

I doubt it. Not sure how much you will gain if you just remove screens. If you take off the screens and clean off the heat sinks, port and polish it, I'm sure you will gain something. That is if you have optimized your intakes already. If you have a stock intake, it will not help you.

Again the descreened MAF is a "MYTH" with no performance gains.
So LPE sold them for years at a profit. So port your intake and polish that MAF internals but so help you if that wire is damaged.
If interested, your ECM controls the MAF's functions.

I cut them out and my car runs fine.

The reason why some people's cars run like crap after they cut the screens out is because they damaged the wire sensor in the middle of the MAF.

i did mine... i just took a hack saw and put a small groove right there where the screen is cause there is a seam there... then took a screw driver and popped off the ends and took out the screens... worked like a charm!!

Talking about damaging the wires is kinda like porting your heads. It works if you do it right. If you port into a water jacket, you're screwed.

Yes, anyone with basic skills can descreen a Maf. But still no actual Performance Gains, not worth the effort and problems.
Buy a Wells Maf if you really want higher airflow. My opinion.

I did mine 2 years ago with no problems at all. I also removed the fins as well.
