LT1 Cam swap and porting Questions!!!Need HELP!

Hi,
Im kind of new around here and have a few questions about a LT1 Cam swap and porting my heads.First I have a 1991 Camaro RS with a 305 tbi equipped with flowmaster exhaust, hypertech chip and open element air filter.I used the search button and found some information but none answered my questions.

First off, here is my dilemma. The previous owner of my camaro broke 2 rear most exhaust studs on the drivers side head and had an annoying exhaust leak.So I tried tapping it out but couldnt because it was too crowded. So I took off the head and tapped out the broken studs. Now that i have the intake and heads off,i took off the water pump to change the timing chain because it has 120K.

So,i figure while im at it, i should see if i can do minor mods to the engine since we all know the LO3 needs some help.So after browsing i can get a lt1 cam under 30 bux.Now my questions.Do i have to change my valve springs? Also can i use my stock timing chain and lifters?Any adjustments to the computer? This is a daily cruiser so im not looking for major gains, just to add a lil bit of performance. Also what kind of idle will it have and should i expect any problems when i install it?If possible are there any links out there...Also how do i know how much to grind off the dowel pin...Sorry for all the questions =I

As for the porting question, since i have the heads off, should i port the heads and intake manifolds? If so any things i should bring into perspective....Money is a major thing so i cannot bring it to the shop but i do have all the tools needed.Thank you in advance

yes you can the cam will just slide right in .

also the 670cfmTB from holley would wake the Lo-3 up.

Also oyu prolly have 2.73 gear's i'd sugest swapong to a 3.42 or 3.73 gear. trust me it will Help iut alot
and LT-1 cam and 3.73 gear's you'll keep up with the L-98 350TPI's.

1. LT-1 cam. $30-$35

2. 3.73 gear's.$150-$300

3. 670Cfm TB.$315.00

so for $650.00 top's you can stay with the L-98 350TPI's But you will beat them off line for the first 0-40mph then you'll be about even till you hit about 91MPH as wear your fyel will cut off if ya didn't correct the speedo. if you reset speedo and bypass limiter.
you'll be dead even with the at roaun 100MPH but then the
L-98's fade fast the LO-3 won't fade till 115mph with 3.73 gear's.

well i wish you good luck........

Here's a couple of things I would suggest on your project;

1. Check the piston to deck distance and get a gasket that is the correct thickness to obtain a good quinch heighth (.04-.05) You can run 10 to 1 compression with proper quinch on an iron headed motor and each point is generally 4% power.

2. Get a good valve job.

3. I would change the springs and retainers to something lighter and better. Consider some LT1 retainers and some Comp 981 springs. You can get the retainers for $13.50 off of Ebay and you can buy the springs from Scoggin Dickey for $55.

Have fun modding,
Teek

Teek,
How would I go about checking the quinch height? What type of measuring tool/device is needed?

You will need a depth micrometer (prefered)or you can use a magnetic base and indicator and get close. Check each piston in at least 3 places to get an accurate measurement, then add whatever thickness head gasket you need to get the quinch (distance from piston to face of the head) to .04"-.05"

Later,
Teek
