LT1 in 3rd gen

I have a 87 camaro with a carbed 383 and a th350. I would like to find a LT1 and a 4l60 or whatever they are in my 87. MY question is what all do i need to do this. I do not have ANY computer left in my car. The plugs are still under dash but box, harness and stuff is gone. Will the computer from the lt1 plug into what i have now. What all will i need to do the swap. Are they easily bolt in. Let me know any info and if u could i would loike to see some pictures of a swap.

You will need the computer and harness from the LT1 car. If you don't have a high pressure fuel pump, you will need that also. I can't remember if the brackets for the F-body fit into a 3rd gen or if it's the brackets from a corvette. Anyway, this swap has been done quite a few times, do a search and see what you come up with.

Why? If you want a better intake, you could get a LT1 intake to work with about $400 - $500. Other than that and the reverse cooling, what do you really hope to gain?

LT1 swaps cost a whole lot of money. I'd consider changing your 383 over to a Superram TPI setup. I say supperram because in Reading you have emissions right? I know my folks in Allentown do. If you can find the right parts for the right price it'll be cheaper and you'll have a 12 sec reliable daily driver.

I know they had a different manifold intake system and I suspect the cam and the EPROM might be a little more agressive but I think that is it

Whoever said the LT1 swaps are expensive.....pffffft, no more expensive than any other swap. The hardest part is the wiring.

If your starting with a v8 your good to go, its a good idea to replace your fuel pump as the lt1 needs it to run at 58 psi, the stock will work but not sure how long it would last. You will need the LT1 and wiring harness.

You can use your old transmission if you have a v8, I know many who have done the swap still running a t5 or 700r4 but it won't last long if you abuse it, go easy on it and you should be fine ti'll you can afford a 4th gen Auto, T-56, or tremec TKO.

If you get an F-Body LT1 you will need to notch the motor cross member a bit to keep AC, if you get a vette LT1, your AC will be fine, but I believe you'll need to do something about power steering. Also on the vette engines, the fuel rail intakes are on the opposite side, you'll need f-body fuel rails.

Lets see....what else....Ah you'll need to route new power steering, AC lines, fuel lines, and radiator lines, not hard.

Just about everything else is re-usable. The hardest part is just the wiring, you can buy a painless wiring harness (expensive, $349-$600 i've seen them for) or you can check out www.speartech.com (also expensive, but best way to go if you got the cash). You can also do it yourself which is what I will do, basically you take your old harness, take out the things you need (Tach, speedometer, relays, etc..., don't need any of the old sensor crap) and putting the LT1 harness on it after getting the old crap out, lots of soldering, theres different ways to go at it, but their all a pain in the butt, whether its on yer wallet or patience :P.

I got my LT1 out of a 95 trans am coming this wednesday, putting it in my 91 RS this week as soon as it arrives, just pulled my old motor and tranny and im ready to begin.

Bought it and a t-56 together for just $2150 w/ 90 day warranty off ebay. Just wait for the good deals, LT1 swap is the way to go, unless of course you can afford a LS1, but that swap is a bit more difficult, feel free to ask me any questions.

Also, if you get an LT1, the most desirable year to get is a 95 for a thirdgen swap. Why? Because it came MAF, has the vented opti and is still OBDI I.

So what has the LT1 got that the L98 doesn't have? The better induction system? You could get an LT1 intake for about $400 or you could go aftermarket.

Awesome thanks for the info. I have a 87 that originally came with a 2.8/700r4 and now has a 383/th350 but would the fuel rails for the corvette motor be ok caseu my fuel lies are on the drivers side? Also What part of the frame must be notched? Thanks
