LS1/T56 In a third gen?
LS1/T56 In a third gen?
Hey guys whats up? I am considering buying a GTA or IROC and putting in a LS1/T56. Whats a good estimate for a used LS1/T56 going to run me? How difficult is this? What needs to be changed? I am assuming the wiring harness. Do the stock motor mount locations work with the LS1? Thanks guys

I'd be very interested in knowing the answer to this question though. If dropping an LS1 in a 3rd gen is feasible I'd love to try that
Unless you can find a screaming deal on an LS1/T-56 I think its a little on the expensive side for what you would get. Used LS1 motors are in high demand at the moment and T-56 transmissions are also in high demand, so it would be fairly expensive. If you go on www.thirdgen.org on the Motor Swap board, they have a ton of tech info on the LS1 swap.
If you want a cool cruiser motor that knocks down good gas mileage, an LS1 might be worth the investment. I just liked my carbed, gen 1 sbc's

well, i am also thinking of doing this changeover this winter. i need to find a cheap 3rd gen. best i can find a motor and tranny is around 5500 bucks. i have seen some 98-99 ls1's out there, but those are the ones that have that oil swirl problem. there is that one vendor that even sells motor mounts and tranny support for this swap, because they did one. sooo, even though it sounds cool, it will be a few bucks. on my 85 lt1 conversion, i dont even have 3k into the whole thing yet and this car hauls ***!!
It's been done but it's a little on the expensive side. Here is one so you can see.
91 Z-28 with LS1 and 6 speed
Pretty cool car.

I think you could buy THREE 3rd gen camaros.... for the price of putting a LS1 with a T56 in a 3rd gen....
Mounts...computer...wiring harness...labor...misc parts.... OH your tranny has to be a 98 and up.... not the LT-1 T56....FUEL system....
Even if you got all the parts used.... I think you would spend about 8-9K including the car....IMO
LS1 motors sell for more than I nice 3rdgen camaro...

I have seen most LS1 with 4L60Es for around 3500. I suggest you look around more and at places that deal with it. The T-56 will of course jack the price up some.
The mounts you will need for the swap are around $250, but are a PIA to put in. You can either screw around with the wiring harness yourself or buy one for the swap(somewhere around $800). Also keep in mind that trucks use GEN 3 motors as well. Do a little research and you will see that it is not as expensive as some people make it out to be.

There are a couple of guys that have completed the swap, I am still in the process of doing it. Figure around the price of a decent crate motor to have an LS1 in your car and wired, provided you do the work yourself.
