Yes It Can Be Done LS1 T56 In 89 Iroc!!

Hi...just to let everyone know that it is possible but a very costly project to do. My car is completely converted to a hydraulic clutch with the T56 out of a 99 camaro. This was a learning experience for a first timer mechanic and I have to say that if I knew then what I know now I would have never got involved with it. I changed the whole interior from tan to black and put in a new suspension including limited slip posi with the stock 3.42 gears. I changed the one fan to a two fan setup wired to a Painless thermostat. A brand new 350 crate motor with a 4BBl carb and fuel pressure regulator. 17 inch wheels with Falken tires....all I need now is the paint job....Good luck 85_305 with your project!!

I just picked up my '87 IROC and had the SAME EXACT VISION. Itt's a big coincidence. How much did it end up costing you and was it really worth it?

Why use an LS1 T56 when there are lots of LT1 T56's out there?

LS1 is lighter, makes 50 more hp, and has the potential for more power.

Transmissions don't make power
P.S. He put in an LS1 T56 Not an LS1 Engine.

I don't know what engine has more potential I know the lt1 heads don't flow as much as the ls1's but hey the l1 will be cheaper like maybe over a thousand or more with that money you can get a lloyd elliot head and cam package and beat ls1 right and left plus the fastest lt1 is faster than the ls1 just ask hpe. to get way up into the higher horsepower with the ls1 an after market or c5r block will be needed plus the exhaust note for the lt1 is nicer.

Well I found the tranny, centerforce clutch and flywheel which I couldnt use on Ebay for $1100. The guy was in need of money. The tranny had 22,000 miles on it. The bell housing I bought from Weir and paid $600. You will also need to change out the slave cylinder if you go with the LS1 tranny. The aluminum drive shaft I also got on ebay for little. You also need the crossmember for the tranny and of course the wiring connectors. Your biggest expense you are gonna have is the tranny. If I had known prior to purchasing the tranny that it was hydraulic with a hydraulic line verses the fork...I would have bought the fork type tranny...

Let me clarify this then...mine uses the hydraulic line not the fork type clutch.

Very curious about this as I have an LS1 T56 trans also. Was wanting to put it in but thought there was a flywheel issue. LS1 flywheel has different bolt pattern as I understood. You also say you have to change the slave cylinder. What style did you have to go to? The clutch and flywheel setup was the only thing holding me back. Thanks for the input!

Re: Ls1 T56 In 89 Iroc!!

I'm using the Weir setup as well. The LS1 t56 doesn't have a clutch fork, it uses a hydraulic throwout bearing (combines the slave cylinder and Throwout bearing in one unit).

Works great once I got the air out of the lines. Didn't last as long as I would've liked but it works awesome. I've had it in the car for the last year and daily driven about 25-30K and I just got the throwout bearing back from it's first rebuild.

well the T56 i connected it to a SB 350 motor. So I had to buy a different flywheel. As far as the clutch I used the centerforce that came with it. The hydraulic linkage would be that of a LS1...with the line feed not the slave cylinder.

Well I had to do research in finding a bell housing that would fit. I made several calls and finally after about a month I found the guy who makes them...his website is... www.weirhotrodproducts.com he will be able to help you with any application you desire...

I dont get it.. Why do all this when a lt1 t56 practicly is a bolt on mod?? There is next to no difference your gonna notice other than the ls1 is a pain and more expensive to put in. So why go though hell again??
