looking for engine to replace stock 305
Re: looking for engine to replace stock 305
I have done several 305 -> 350 upgrade projects over the years. One of the cheapest, easiest and most fun upgrades I have done is to yank the stock 305 for a new GM "Targetmaster" universal replacement 350. It'll cost you $1300 complete to your door and comes with a warranty. You bolt on your intake, front end accessories and drop it in. It's a true bolt-in that a first-timer could tackle with a little help from a knowlegable neighbor or friend.
Rated at 250 HP, which is quite a bit more than any 305 of that vintage. And trust me, you WILL fell the difference in the seat of your pants. It'll be NOTICABLY faster than with the 305. And you can still run it on 87 Octane, it'll still get decent mileage and it'll still pass emissions if you tune it anywhere close to correct. It's also a very easy engine to upgrade later- better heads, bigger cam, etc. Just about anything you do to it will make it even faster.

Re: looking for engine to replace stock 305
thanks for the info but ive decided to stick with the 305 and just get parts for it. these are some of the things im looking at:
- exhaust
- headers
- camshaft
- carburator
- intake manifold
- cylinder heads
what else should i look for and what companies should i look at to find these parts?

Save your money and use your current carb. Nothing wrong with it. If you get anything else, you're going to have to get a different distributor, too. And you won't make any more power than you would with the stock carb for all that money spent.
Cylinder heads - up to you. I chose aftermarket, but re-doing your stock heads is viable.

Sticking with the 305 is OK but ONLY if you stay with parts that will transfer over to a 350 when the 305 croaks.
Stick with parts like those in my sig. That will put you in the mid-14s easy. And follow the link at the end of my sig for a lowdown on how to hop-up your stock heads

I don't race the Camaro regularly, but based on observed performance, weight as measured at the track scale, and generally accepted formulas for converting track performance to HP from the times I have had it out at the track, I'm putting about 250 HP to the rear wheels. With a stock computer-controlled distributor.
As for how well I do - that's a little hit & miss on any given day, but I'm headed to Pomona next week for the NHRA Summit ET Finals in the Sportsman class.

It is a LOT cheaper to hold yourself to 350 gross hp and not have to overhaul the tranny and rear, too.
350 hp will get you nicely into the 13s, which is a fast car by anyone's standards.
