looking for engine to replace stock 305

i was wondering if anybody has a modified 305 or 350 that i can buy to replace my stock 305 on my '83 camaro. im kindof new to engine mods so i dont know much but my present engine has 153000 miles on it so i dont know how much longer itll last. im looking for anything thats cheaper than buying a brand new engine or rebuilding my present one.

Well, lets just say that my Z28 has 200k on it.. ripped it apart last week, and everything looked like BRAND NEW. Oh ya, and it is a 305.

Yeah, you can get a fresh 290 hp 350 GM crate motor with a 3yr/36k mile warrantee for 1600$.

Or, you could be like me and totaly rebuild your 305; EXCEPT when your done, end up with 300 hp and 350 torque. Oh ya.. and that is under $800.

Please be sure to add up all your costs and get back to us when you are done checking the power on the chassis dyno. It'll make an interesting writeup.

83Camaro, please let us know which state you are in. There *might* be some hot-swappable motors laying around here somewhere but shipping costs on a low-buck might make 'em not worth it

Just because your 305 has 153,000 miles on it does not mean it is worn out. If it runs well and isn't leaking like a sieve, just keep on driving it while at the same time putting whatever you can aside for the new engine. In a year or two you'll be ready cash-wise for that 350 swap.

305s can run a long time so don't worry about what the odometer says

Ya, sitting bull is right. 305's are freaking mileage beasts. 200k on mine, and when i stripped it down, it looks like brand freaking new. And ws6transam, I will DEFFINENTLY get back to everyone here when I dyno it. I will even give the price of everything. BUT, I have to find a dyno around here.

You are going to have to define "lots of power" here. It means different things to different people. An LS1 owner will think lots of power STARTS at 350 HP, whereas us 305 owners think "lots of power" is anything over 260 HP. "run like a beast""lots of power"and "budget"rule out a lot of stuff. I'd suggest pocket porting your heads, installing a nitrous cam, and bolting on a nitrous kit as a way of running like a beast, being cheap, and having lots of power.

Right, when I think lots of power I think over 400 RWhp.

Re: looking for engine to replace stock 305

First of all when looking for a new engine to replace what you have shop around. There are many aftermarket companies producing turn key SBC Engines some for under 2,000 dollars. Others for alot more if you're on a tight budget i'd stay away from Ligenfelter though. Pretty pricey but hey he does get results. I've looked on E-Bay and found some good turn key crate engines with decent power for under 2 grand, not 400hp. Some with 300 and up. But why start with 400 I think it's more fun to mod it lol. Anyways thats just my 2 cents.
