lets pick out a cam

i will be building my 350. it will contain afr's, hsr or miniram, pistons, crank, rods, etc. i am trying to decide what cam to get. i was just going to get the hotcam kit but the heads will already have the springs installed. so, i am looking at other cams now. i know i can buy the cam seperate, but i just want to consider other cams first. i definately do want to hear the cam lope. however, i am not looking for a drag car. on a scale from one to ten with one being stock lope and ten being a drag car, i want a lope around five to six. i was considering the 305 comp cam (253 duration and .525 lift) but i didn't know if that would be too large or not. any suggestions would be great.

That cam is for hydraulic flat-tappets. Your 1987 block should have hydraulic rollers. It is also WAAAYYYY large for your application. Expect a rough idle above 1000 rpm, minimal vacuum at idle and peak power above 6 grand (which compliments the MR, but KILLS low torque).

I'd pick something with 230 - 240° duration (@ 0.050") and LSA's around 112°. Expect an idle around 750 rpm, mild lope, respectable vacuum and low torque and peak power in the high fives. Try the 290HR-12.

He could easily run a 250+ duration cam in a street going car. However, He's not telling us the whole story yet. Things like power (hp and tq) goals, and compression ratio can have serious affect on a cam choice. A BIG cam with long duration will need added compression for example. The cam he listed is probably a flat tappet grind but he could easily do a comp cam CC305 which is a 220/230 duration mid .550"'s lift piece. I'd go bigger, something along the lines of a Comp Extreme Energy 236/242 grind(roughly .580 lift w/1.6 rockers probably) with more lift. The lobes are very aggressive on the XE cams and hopefully his valvesprings are up to the task. Last time I heard that cam in a 383 LT1 with about 11.5:1 compression, idling at 1200 and it was definately camming hard. That car went on to run 120mph in the 1/4 also Rear gear ratio, transmission type and weight of car also play part of deciding.

Calling Comp Cams, Lunati, and Crower and talking to tech people should be his goal right now. Getting a pro opinion and reccomendation would be worthwhile on a serious engine build Goodluck!

I couldn't find a listing for "CC305" in Comp's current catalog. For the 305H the spec's are as he listed, and Comp recommends 11:1 cr and 4000 rpm stall, in a medium wt car. That's kind of at the extreme end of what I'd consider streetable and would be a pain to live with on a daily basis.

The cam I mentioned specs as follows:
Hydraulic Roller
Dur. @ 0.050" - 230 int/ 240 exh
Max Lift w/ 1.5:1 ra - 0.510" int/ 0.540" exh
LSA - 112°
(So actually our recommendations are fairly similar.)

Recommended for highly modified TPI with 2500 rpm stall.

I know of two people who are running this cam with a MR, AFR 190's, 355 cid, stock 3.2x gears and 3000+ rpm stalls. Their times are consistently between 12.0 and 12.2. One in an '81 Malibu, the other in an '87 Monte SS. Neither is "Pro-Streeted", but both paid attention to traction mods.

i run a solid roller 383 stroker with a MR and 215cc Canfield heads. i went with a comp custom grind 242/242 @.50 .572/.572 with 1.5 pro magnum rockers for my motor. i may go to a 1.6 (.610/.610 lift), but i have to see how this setup performs on teh dyno first. it will make power to 6500rpms.

its basically the same solid roller cam TPIS recommends for higher horsepower MR applications. it made over 500rwhp on a 406 with good flowing heads and a MR...and was totally streetable.

i guess the bottom line is you can make 500rwhp N/A with a bigger cam and still be totally streetable.

sorry guys, shane and i were trying to find the cc305 and we couldn't find it. we actually thought the one we listed was the cc305 but obviously not. this car is not a daily driver but will be drove on the street once every other week or so. we were looking at a hotcam but we didn't know if we would be able to hear it or not. i think he is going to use 1.5 rockers first and if we need a little more down the road we will put in 1.6. i am not sure on the compression ratio that he wants to run. i know he wants it higher than his stock compression. i thought the compression in my lt1 (10.5) would be a good starting place, but maybe we need it to be higher.
