Top speed on stock is around 120 then your s rated tires will explode like fire stones on an suv.
What are you looking for, auto or standard?
The standard 5 speed could get you to well over 120 with a 5.7L.
The auto will limet you to around 110 because when your in 4th gear and you push the throttel down more than 1/3 the way it down shifts into 3rd gear. You run out of gear in the autos.
I have had my 2.8 V6 5 speed to 110-115mph and it had more than, I ran out of road it just takes a while to get up to that speed.

I pinned the needle in my 87 305 A4. It stops at about 240 km/h and the RPMS were at about 4500. I kept on going until 5500 and I'd say it was about 250 - 260ish. I'll never do that again, I was sh!ting bricks!!

jayjay, just because the speedometer goes to 145mph doesn't mean that the car is capable of going that fast. You are forgetting the laws of physics. Why don't you go out an do about 140mph and stick your hand out the window. You'll either snap your elbow backwards or have your arm sand blasted by bugs. Whats the point of this? Its called Drag. Your car needs enough power to overcome the effects of drag. if you don't have the power to push the oncoming air out of your way at over 140 mphyou won't go any faster.

The same is true with the rear end gearing, it actually ties in. I used to have 2.77 gears in my car. My top speed had I enough power would have been upwards of 175mph or more. I just didn't have the power to push the car that fast because of the parasitic power "loss" caused by drag. On the other hand, I now have 3.73 gears and ~300hp. I have gone up to 5000 rpm in overdrive which is nearing redline. 148mph is what that gets me.

Does this make any sense to you or do you still think 230hp at the crank should make a car go 155mph?

Road and Track tested the 1987 IROC against a 1987 mustang. the IROC went 149 the mustang went 148 and the 5.0 blew up.
Also my buddies 87 IROC has had the needle burried, with its new 355cid motor.

3rd gens have a pretty low co-effecient (sp?) of drag so they can hit top speeds pretty good...

i was on a road i didnt real know but i knew it was pretty straight... my buddy in his 91z28 was behind me... he tried to pass me and we both put it down... he's got a 305 TPI and it kept up till about 170km/h and then hit his limiter... i had the car way past the 220km/hr marker around 255 when i came over a hill and saw a set of rail road tracks... i figured this was the end of my life so i kept it punched... to my suprise didnt have a problem at all and let up right after... the nose gets really light at those speeds when you let off the glass... when its punched the thing just sticks to the road though...
