L98
Re: L98
The guy on the other board "Notorious" is WRONG...he says that the F-bodies got the aluminum heads...that is completely wrong...the Y-bodies (VETTES) had the aluminum heads. I know what L98's look like...I just pulled my original '92 L98 from my Z last year and had a 383 built. The engine in the picture above is most definitely a 305 TPI NOT a 350. LT1's first appeared in the Vette's in '92 and the first time in F-bodies in '93. '87 is "considered" the forst year for the 350 L98 engine and they were available in the Iroc's or Z28's til '92. You can even tell that engine is a 305 by the accessory mounting....and even just by looking at it. Check the vin and the casting on the block and you'll see.

Re: L98
Thirdgens have been out so long now, some people may not even be trying to fool you since god only knows how many people have modified it and sold it already. The 4th owner may have believed owner #3 when he told him it was all stock and then he tries to pass it off as the same.
Re: L98
That's is the stock 85 305 TPI... 350 tpi was not put in the camaro till 86. Witch is the only year there was a 350 TPI "without" centerbolt heads. And the LT1 didn't come in a camaro till 93, and 92 in the big brother "The Vette".
Re: L98
Yep. No aluminum heads for the 3rd gens. I found a great old "Motor Week" video on the 87 Iroc on the web and they confirmed that the aluminum heads from the Vette had a hood clearance problem on the IROC. I think it was probably because GM didn't want the IROC to be faster than the heavier Vette. Probably the reason a 5 or 6 speed manual was never inroduced.

Re: L98
1987 through 1992 L98 f-bodies did indeed get the L98 code on their RPO stickers. The B2L package included the L98 engine. This has been discussed and proven over at thirdgen.org (including many photos of rpo stickers showing both L98 and B2L).
The original Corvette L98 (introduced in model year 1985) had iron heads.
Halfway through model year 1986, aluminum heads were introduced on the either the Corvette convertibles or coupes (can't recall which one though I tend to believe it was the 'verts).
In model year 1987, all Corvettes went to aluminum heads.

Yes, you got to love those 50 1986 Camaros with the 350 engine that went to the Big Crusher and are still remember to this day. They also had a name: TEST MULES....
Which means they were not sold to the public.

Re: L98
There you are wrong. Not all the time but since we all know there were 50 Camaros produced with the 350 in 86 it is also a known fact by everyone that they did not make it to public sale. The guy that did the reseach on this just noted it because they were test mules.
also you cant tell a 350 from a 305 from the look of the engine. There is also NO VIN code for the 350s made in 86. They were crushed or destroyed.
