just wondering about hp
just wondering how much horse i should have with my 87 305tpi with a cat back flowmaster system, accel 8.8 wires, accel cap and rotor rapid fire ac plugs removed baffles from air box with k and n drop ins bypassed tb coolant and an airfoil. i was told the 87 tpi got 205 hp from the factory because of the beefed up rollercam when teamed witht the 700r4 just wondering how much horse i should estimate and torque
specs for a stock '87 305 TPI AUTO are:
190HP@4000
295TQ@3200
> '87 thru '89 automatics came w/ a waeker cam, giving the 5-speeds a 25HP advantage over the autos (215 vs. 190)
**************************************************
what does your 305 put out now? well if i had to take a guess, i'd expect a decent 25HP gain, so that'd bring you up to around 215. i think it'd be safe to say your motor is putting out somewhere around there.

About 190/195 HP, reason nothing you did or added will increase HP by much. Just Items to make the engine run better then stock.
How if you added Headers or 3" Catback exhaust now you might make 215 HP at the fywheel.

You dont make Horsepower for example by installing sparkplug wires and a AIRFOIL.
thats why im asking cause i dont know. i like the answers i hear very reason able i did read in the 87 tpi iroc-z brochure they came factory with 205 but if you say 190 i believe it headers are a no no at this point the bolts are siezed in there and until i rebuild the motor i wont be adding headers i heard pulleys are good but mess with charging and cooling which im running 13 exact at voltage so i might not mess with that either oh and just for the record im not running my smog or ac belt. just wondering not assuming or insisting just a freindly question
If you want a final answer and not some guess estimates have your car tested on a Dyno. For a location check this site www.dynojet.com .

sparkplug wires by themselves may not add power, but when combined w/ other upgrades i guarantee that such parts will help make more power as compared w/ "stock" plugs and wires....
for example... lets say a 305TPI gets some decent mods installed BUT still has the "stock" plugs and wires... i'd be willing to bet these parts will certainly add power, but when combined w/ aftermarket plugs, wires and maybe even an ignition coil, there will be a slight power increase. think about it...
stronger spark + better combustion = power increase
so ok maybe we aren't talking about no 20HP gain, but chances are there will be some type of increase showing up on the dyno!

Plugwires and a coil and such things as that are more "support" mods than anything else. They don't give you power just by having them.....but if you have made other modifications you may need them to maximize your potential.
For instance...if you do a head swap that bumps up your compression, you need a stronger spark to light the mixture effectively. Therefore, you need a stronger coil and more conductive wires. If you install a rev-kit that will keep your valvetrain stable up to say 7000rpm, then you need a performance ignition module because the stock modules start to scatter at around 5000-5500rpm.

Lets see here. a cat back flowmaster system, accel 8.8 wires, accel cap and rotor rapid fire ac plugs removed baffles from air box with k and n drop ins bypassed tb coolant and an airfoil.
Cat back-25hp
Wires- 5hp
Rotor/cap/plugs-15hp
cut some plastic-10hp
K&N Filters(2! The big ones!)-25hp
Bypass and airfoil- 10hp
I wish the aftermarket was real in every way
280 or so Hp wouod be awesome but I would say you added 20-30 more HP across the entire powerband. Definately a good improvement! Goodluck and keep it safe.
