just got back from the track...

A car flipped and another dropped it's engine so even though I was at the track for like 3 solid hours, I only got 3 runs due to hours of cleanup and huge lines.

16.8 @ 63mph, my first 1/4 run EVER, little nervous, the lights went FAST, I wasn't ready....spun my wheels....what made it worse was the fact that the 2nd car next to me was a 2k vette that ran a 13.5 which REALLY looked bad

15.6 @87mph my second run, 0-60 was 2.2 which wasn't bad at all, all my 1/8 miles where under 10 seconds (9.999, 9.990), old camaro SS ran a 15.4 next to me....pretty tight

15.5 @ 88mph my third and final run, i smoked the acura intergra with it's huge wing even though my 0-60 was slower then my second run (i knew off the line i had messed the launch a little) i still managed to drop my time.....had I been able to run a few more times i would LIKE to think i could have run a 15.4 or 15.3.....

considering i had never done a 1/4 or even practiced launching until i did my first run i think i did alright, my iroc is bone stock, tomorrow i'll be up at 5am and driving over to my buddies as we install a much larger cam get me a lumpy idle and some more power in third gear.....i would hit 3700RPM in 3rd gear and after that i lost power, once i hit 80 my acceleration went to crap...hopefully the cam will give me some more power and let me run maybe a 15 flat

ill scan the timeslips later, just thought id share my first experience at the track in case anyone cared.....

Not bad at all. Practice practice practice! I had an '85 Z28 305 TPI and it usually ran 15.3's and 15'4's at abou the same MPH as yours. The best I ever got out of it was a 15.19 at 91 MPH (don't ask me how I remember that. ) Keep working at it and you may dip into the 14's.

Not bad at all really! My 305 only ran a 15.60 with a 2.09 60 foot time. I had Drag radials on the car and 2.73 gears. Traction wasn't a problem haha Might have had a Descreened mass air sensor also. Goodluck with the modifications!

PS: Don't go TOO big on that camshaft, do some research and talk to the fine folks at Competition Cams www.compcams.com.

If Big means a ton of duration and lift, it's gonna give you BIG timeslips Like 17 second time slips. hehe Match the parts as best you can.

Make sure you put in some valve springs recommended for the cam. Even a stock cam should be able to pull above 3700 rpm. It sounds like your valve springs are shot. Don't even think about using them with a new cam.

Springs are fine, it's the damn peanut cam, 390 lift = crap

well shoot, since you've got that leak, it means you've got to take the engine out and rebuild it, right? when i say rebuild, i mean, matched cam, intake, polish&port heads or better yet, new heads, bore it, valve springs, 1.6:1 rr, headers, and so on, and so on, and so on.... once that bug bites, you can't help but scratch it oh and three runs in 3 hours, thats pretty good, try goin to the only track within 2 hours of cincy thats open still, we were there for 4 1/2 hours and only got 2 runs in, we spent 30 minutes between gettin inline lettin the engine cool.

Nah, the 305 isn't getting any money invested in it. As long as my parents let me use the garage as workspace, I'm gonna see If I can start building a 350 up, even if it takes a couple years....the 305 only has 75k on it, she'll last till I get put a 350 in. But I really don't wanna spend money on it, just wailt til she dies, work around the engine, exhuast, stuff like that....I only did the cam cause it was free from a friend and he knew how to do it, good experience, I saw how to do the work, got some hands on experience.....

Thats a good plan. Only buy parts that will swap over to the 350, and milk the 305 for all its worth in the meantime. I'm doing the same...but I'll need some boost to make it any fun while I wait.

I'm kinda torn right now on what to do. Putting a 350 in means I'll be waiting ALOT longer before I see high performance.

My buddy who put the camshaft in for me is convinced I can get 300RWHP out of my 305. I don't know, a 350 is a slam dunk way to know I can get 300HP out of it. His arguement is that 5.0 Mustangs have been getting 3OO+HP out of 302 blocks for years and that I can easily get 300HP out of my 305 with some engine work.

I just don't know, that means a rebuild with a higher compression ratio, new heads, completely redoing the engine to hit 300RWHP. Thats like 2k in parts alone not to mention 50+ hours of work. Which I would want to do myself, but I am not ready to do that kind of work alone. Pulling the engine, making sure everything will run correctly....on the other hand a 350 would take me years to learn and build, and 3-5k in the long term between the tools required to do that kind of work and parts. Plus I wouldnt' see results for years, while I could possibly starting working on the 305 in the next 12 months. I don't know....gotta like the idea of running a 13.5 and having everyone at the track go "no way that's a 305 in there".......ohn well, something to look forward to....all I know is I'm hooked on small-block chevys....2 things are certain, I'll never buy a new car, and I'll never buy a "practicle" car, it's gonna be all F/Y bodies from here on....

It's easier for a ford 302 to get 300hp than a chev 305 getting 300hp. Because of the bore stroke combination, the ford is a better engine (5.0L)

Since most street engines are capable of getting one HP per cubic inch, go with a 350. 45 more cubic inches usually means around 45 more HP with just an engine swap.

i wouldnt suggest building a 305, they are fun to toy with when u have stock heads and cam, but when u wanna get serious a 350 is a lot better investment. speed cost money how fast do u wanna go? i know a kid with a stock head and cam l98 that does low 13s N/A, its all in combination, free mods and putting the power to the ground.

A really good idea is to go find a set of 305 heads from the wrecker and port and polish them. You'll gain a good 30 hp and they'll work excellently on that 350 when its time rolls around. Follow the link at the end of my sig.

Your ideas are good. Only do things to the 305 that will transfer over to the 350.
