It was a graduation gift. 1989, aside from the repairs that we know it needs, there is a problem eluding us. The car begins to shut off at about 1/2 tank of fuel. We fill up and it's fine again till half tank. Gas gauge doesn't work either, don't know if problems are related. Please help!!

does it have an external fuel pump i had one that someone put a carb on it and instead of geting a new fuel pump asembly the just took the pump off and dident put a hose or anything on it and it would die at around half a tank ether way the problem should be in the tank
