I bet that car has hollowed cats on it. Tap on them with a screwdriver. With cats and a good functioning air pump it would make a dramatic difference in terms of the HC level(which is unburnt fuel)

The weather cleared and I took a look under the hood. There IS an EGR port that is blocked off. It looks as though I could acquire an EGR and get it hooked up. Obviously, I have no control solenoid nor do I see where I can plug that in. But I could probably figure that out.

yeah, your car should pass with good cats, a working EGR and a well tuned carb(yours might be tuned fine if you get the other stuff)

Re: Just BOMBED Emissions Test

I leaned out the carb yesterday and the exhaust has a better smell already. The motor was feeling a little sluggish at high RPMs, like it was to flooded with fuel. After leaning the mix it has better response.

I think that if I get the EGR and hook up the EEC canister, then replace the cats that it'll pass.

where in VA do you live? I used to live in Va and we didn't take emissions. and I think all Va inspection stickers are the same.

Re: Just BOMBED Emissions Test

I live in Prince William County. Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, and Stafford all need emissions testing.

The latest development is that I actually have a Holley Street Dominator intake (not an Edelbrock) and that the blocked off port that I thought was an EGR port is actually a choke port. I just bought an Edelbrock Performer series intake that HAS an EGR port. I have an appointment next Tuesday to have it installed and the EGR to be hooked up.

My next spot of worry is that the carb is an Edelbrock 600cfm, model 1406 that is not spec'd as "EGR compliant." Hopefully, these good ol' boy mechanics have the skills to make this work without a new carb as well.
