Intake for 3rg gen cars
Intake for 3rg gen cars
I am very new to the f-body community. Two weeks ago I recieved a 92 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI, and this week I picked up a 88 Trans Am GTA. They are both in mint condition. I am looking to start modifying the GTA, and can not decide on an intake. Any suggestions? I have looked at the LT1 intake converted over to be used on a L98, and the Holly Stealth Ram. Does anyone have either of these? Does anyone know which one give the most HP increase? Please help, I am not used to "american" muscle. I on the other hand know quite a bit about single or twin turbo set ups. I own an AWD Turbo Talon, and a Twin Turbo Mitsubishi 3000, so please help.
The LT1 intake is very good as well as the Holley.
Only problem with the Holley is the height, it needs to be shaved down to clear the stock hood.
The LT1 needs to have a remote thermostat housing, but if you get the kit from LT1intake.com then you are set.
Go over to thirdgen.org if you haven't been there already. There is a lot more 3rd gen tech info there, and most of the info is accurate.

i have heard real good things about the holley my freind has one on his gta, im not sure about the height problem cause my freind has a ram air hood on his car but he has said real good things about it!
I have also been doing some research on the Holley Stealth Ram. First of all the stock runner design is great for torque, but when you reach 4500, it sucks. Because of the shape of the runners, the air will flow great at low RPM's, but when you get into high RPM's the runners actually slow the air down, creating less horspower. The good thing about the Holley Stealth Ram, is that the runners are simmilar to a twin quad setup for carbs, the runners are much shorter, which means less toque of the line, but you can run them up to 6500 RPM, without losing power. Also the Stealh Ram, is quite cheap for a new intake. They are like 200 for the intake, then you must buy the Holley fuel rails for it to work, for another 250, so for about 500, you can have a top end monster. They have said it has hp gains of about 62 hp for the Stealh Ram. Good Luck!
What I would do, since your going to have the intake off and all, you might as well go ahead and make your car a Vortech TPI. You can buy a pair of Vortech heads for roughly $350. But your stock manifold will not work, so you must buy a new manifold which cost $399.(your stock upper manifold and runners will do fine) This setup was tested by GM High Tech Performance magazine on a Stock 88 IROC 350 TPI, and it unleashed 305 hp. You say "Wow, that's LS1 power" Exactly!
Yeah but Vortech heads are iron and quite a bit heavier than aluminum ones which should help your front end to lift off a little better. Should you decide to change later on, you have to get rid of the whole kit because Vortech heads don't play well with others. IOW, you cannot use a set of Vortech heads and other manifolds for your car. You have to use the Scoggy Dickins one.
I had the mini ram on my car and LOVED it!!! Then I got stupid and sold it...then ended up with an edelbrock lower, TPIS large tube runners and plennum and hated it...now I have the Holley Stealth Ram...I've been real pleased with it, not quite the mini ram, but for the money its hard to beat.
