Question installed headers on 305

I just recently put a set of headman emission legal headers on my 92 camaro and now the damn thing wont pass smog, they said it was running to rich. i wanted to know if it had something to do with the stock o2 sensor. do i need to replace it with a different one or something??

You need to see if the O2 sensor is getting old and lazy. If you have a scantool, you can see it change voltage. If you suspect it is bad, change that and have see if that helps. Also, what else did you do to the car?

Did you run the car for a 1/2 hour before going for the test, and did you do an oil change?
Is the O2 sensor physically the same distance from the heads as on the stock manifold? The O2 needs to be as close as possible to the heads, mine are SLP shorties and the O2 bung is centered on the collector right after the primaries merge.

If you think it is the O2 sensor and are willing to spend a little more money and time, get a heated O2 sensor and see if it helps.

Re: installed headers on 305

A heated 02 usually might help, but not because its a heated 02. It will help because its new. Heated 02s are rarely needed with emissions legal shorty headers. They're usually only required when the 02 location is significantly further back in the flow, like you would find with long tube headers.

My advice:

1. Replace the 02. They're cheap, often fail (or read incorrectly), and even if it doesn't completely fix the problem, gas mileage should increase slightly.

2. Put the stock chip back in for the test.

3. Check to see that your fuel pressure is not too high.

Also check over the entire ignition system. A weak spark is a major culprit of a rich condition.

O2 sensor may be bad. Replace it with a $25 Bosch unit. I've used them, I love them.

With your chip, it makes your car run cooler. It turns the fans on sooner. Use stock chip, do oil change, get that bitch good and hot (over 200*) and then run emissions on it. Should do the trick.

Aren't the Hedmans that he is using longtubes? Also, at this time of the year, it might help if it is freezing cold and it is dropping out of closed loop because the sensor is getting too cool.

Don't use all capital or bold letters. It is interpreted as rudeness.

NOT WHEN HE'S THANKING US!

aklim - he stated "heddman emission legal headers". Heddman does not make emission legal long tubes, nor does anyone else. All emission legal 3rd gen headers are shorty style.
