While its generally considered a bad idea to re-use your old converter you can get away with it in certain situations.
If you know for sure that you only fried clutch material then its no biggie. It'll get cleaned out by the filter.
However, if you chewed some metal pieces up then you'd best not re-use that old converter as metal peices can get by the filter and into your fluid easy enough. Then you have to worry about the metal chunks tearing the clutches in the new tranny to bits.
I reused the the TC from my old tranny on this new built one. The old tranny's governor cover plate had slipped and i lost nearly all the fluid. When I went to downshift passing a truck it went into 2nd gear and destroyed the band. I had so much clutch material in my pan the magnet couldn't even hold it all.
1,000 miles on the new tranny and there aren't any indications that anything is wrong. Fluid looks great, and the tranny shifts quick and firmly. built trannies with shift kits are a wonderful thing.
BTW, I rebuilt the tranny in my car myself. About a weekends worth of work, including the shift kit install.
