Talking I'm buying an 89 Formula and I need your opinion

My boss's daughter is selling her 89 Formula for 1200 dollars. It has 181,000 miles on it, the interior looks great. The body has some rust on the rocker panels and in the rear wheel wells. The paint doesn't look that bad. The T-tops don't leak. It was broken in to a while ago and the theifs broke the passenger side lock cylinder, so it is not there anymore.

This car runs great and the transmission shift are really good. Neither one had been replaced, but my boss replaced the valve seals a couple years ago. I have all the service records for it and the oil was changed every 3,000 miles. My boss took real good mechanical care for the vehicle. His daughter drove it safely and babied it.

I plan on buying this tomorrow so I just want your guys opinion. Thanks.

Sounds cheaper than the $5500 I paid for my 89 Iroc. Oh wait, mine only had 56,000 miles.

It definitly sounds like a good deal to me...

Thanks I forgot to mention that I'm buying this just to satisfy my F-body thirst. I don't know how long i'll have it but I'm also saving for a 94-95 Z28.

Which engine does it have? Check the 8th digit of the VIN if you don't know, F is 305 TPI, 8 is 350 TPI, and I can't recall what the 305 TBI code is...

181k miles, dang that is a crapload of miles, and rust is a big bitch, busted lock, etc... The engine and tranny not being rebuilt means they are going to need it pretty soon. Sounds like it could be a money pit. But I guess $1200 is alright especially if it is a 350...

The "E" is the code for the TBI, and if it has that, run far away. That engine sucks for performance. It makes a good daily driver tho.

It does have the 305 TBI. I plan to make it a daily driver for a while. I plan to fix a few things on it and sell it after awhile. I know it has a lot of miles but miles don't mean that much to me. The engine runs strong from what I saw and drove. The tranny shifts when it is suppose to, and firm. But if the motor ends up taking a crap i'll have the 305 TBI out of my dads 91 Camaro RS. He is putting in a 350, I dont plan on doin that just because I will only have it for a bit.

I got my 87 Formula 350 for $800 with close to the same amount of miles. The carpet had a few holes and the paint is faded but it had over $1000 worth of SLP parts on it, headers, 3" Cat back exhaust, runners and part of a cold air package. To me it was worth it. The car ran great until I took the wife out to the track with it and it spun three main bearings. I wanted to see what it would turn in the 1/4 before I started to work on it. Oh well, I have a 388 short block going in it I just need to swap out the cam (Lazer Cams), right now it has a 502/519 lift 240/245 @.050 duration 108* seperation cam and that is too much for my TPI application.
