Ignition switch woes.

Well I went to autozone I bought an ignition switch for a manual car the other day since they didn't have and automatic ones in stock. The ignition switch I have I believe is for an automatic. My car was originally an auto but was swapped out for a 5 speed.

Well I got the ignition switch in and everything together, but still no go. The high beams work, but I'm still having the same no start problem. I'm guessing maybe I should have gone with the automatic ignition switch instead of the one for a manual tranny?

Also, for some reason now, my brake lights are on no matter what, whether my foot is on the brake or not. Anyone know why this is? Obviously it's something I did, but I'm not sure what.

Thirdly, there's one random loose red wire under there. I believe it was loose earlier, because I don't remember unhooking it from anything. There's one purple wire just like it that goes to something, and a similiar green one. The red one however, I can't figure out where it goes. It's just a small, 12 gage or so wire with a small connector on the end, not a huge 10 or 12 prong one or anything. Anyone know what this is and where it goes or if I should even bother? Could it be causing my no-start issue? If you'd like I can get a picture of it.

-Thanks, Brandon

EDIT: The red wire says "PED 6" on it if that matters.

check your brakelight switch
i've completely forgotten the type of switch used but its probably the type that is turned off when the brake pedal is all the way up, so if its removed from the bracket it simulates an always on situation

that may be the loose wire under there that you are refering to

as for the no start problem does the motor turn over? click? nothing?

Re: Ignition switch woes.

why did you determin the ignition switch was at fault?

there should be a switch on the brake pedal
if you look up under the dash, you'll see it, its a normally closed switch,
you have to push th button to turn the brakes off

Re: Ignition switch woes.

First the ignition worked fine, then every once in a great while, I'd get a situation where when I put it into the crank position nothing happened, no noise or anything. I didn't hear a clicking, so I figured it wasn't the starter solenoid that had just been replaced a month earlier anyways. Finally, one day it just wouldn't work. I'd turn it into the crank position and nothing would happen, so I figured it was the ignition switch and went to replace that.

I figured out the brake lights, thank you, now I need to know if that red wire could still be causing my problem or if I got the wrong Manual tranny switch.

-Thanks

Re: Ignition switch woes.

I have an 88 Iroc originally a 5 speed, now a 6 speed, regardless I am having the same problem. It starts like 80% of the time, and when it doesnt it doesnt even click.

So I wired a hot wire from the starter pos post, up to an area near the battery. When it doesnt start, I bypass it and touch the wire to the pos batt terminal and it fires right up. Is this your same prob? I am pretty sure I need a new ignition switch, but I dont know anything about them for this car.

Help anyone? Where should I get one, how much, and how does it go in??

Get one from any auto parts store, it'll cost you about $10-$15 and all you do is drop the steering column (2 screws) and then pull the switch off with 2 screws and unhook the wires. You put the new one on and then put everytihng back together. Unfortunately I'm facing bigger problems, but you should be fine.

EDIT: Check out my post count.... badass.

Re: Ignition switch woes.

Allright, what the ****. this is ridiculous. I've tried replacing it with an automatic one, and still no ****en luck. Anyone know what the hell the problem is? Nothing seems to be working, could it be something other then the ignition switch? Could it be that red wire I mentioned or something?

Re: Ignition switch woes.

Have you done any work around the center console, sounds more like you have lost a connection on the neutral/park start circuit, which would have been modified. there could be a safty switch on the clutch pedal. check for wires and switch wher the shifter was, even park/emergency brake switch. As for the red wire it must have been plugged in somewhere at some time. Check the 3amp cranking fuse on the main fuse board.

Re: Ignition switch woes.

RED wires are HOT wires, if it is dangling it must be off of something! That is most likely your problem.

That's what I'm thinking. I need to find a 3rd gen to look under now to figure out where that goes.....

Re: Ignition switch woes.

You know, I really can't find a 3rd gen to look at. All the junkyards around me won't let me drop the steering column in the car to follow the wire, nor do I have any friends that own a 3rd gen.

Does anyone know where I could find some wiring schematics or would anyone be willing to look under the dash of their car and find the wire I'm talking about and try to tell me where it goes. I'm sure it's no more then 10 minutes of work if that. Just 2 nuts to drop the steering column, and you might not even have to do that.

-Thanks, Brandon
