Ignition stuck on 89 IROC.... anyone have similar probs?

Well pretty much the title tells it all. I put the key in the ignition and it will not turn. Stuck. This happened to me once before but it turned with slight pressure. this time I used a little to much and actually broke the cheap plastic tabs on the tumbler. Has anyones ever gotten stuck like this? I think I have a spare vats tumbler and whole steering column, so I am going to replace the ignition switch tomorrow. Can I just swap the ignition modules? Because the two wires that detect the VATS chip are cut now.

Yeah, well right now there is a hole where the lock cylinder used to sit. so I won;t worry about it draining, just wanted to see if anyone else ran into this prob with the VATS f-bodies

so are you saying you can't pull the key out of the lock at all?
atleast that's what i think by reading your post
i don't know, mine got stuck and i just wiggled the wheel and it popped out
on a dodge truck at work, sometimes it's not all the way in park so it won't let it out til it is

mine is sort of like that...for some reason if i put it in the "lock" position i have to really force it to get it to turn again.

Sounds like a tumbler problem,if you have two keys try the newer of them. Some times the key wears down to a point that it does'nt set the tumbler just right and won't turn,if this works have new key made that works good and keep it for copying when needed. However sometimes it is the tumbler that wears out an that means lock change,or rebuild.

Well all is well after about 6 hours of work. My steering wheel never locked as long as I have had the car, and I never really thougt about it that much, but came to find out that that little spring that pushes the lock pin out had snapped. It was caught in the teeth and would not allow the tumbler to turn. I had a spare 89 column, and removed that tumbler(this was all before I knew it was just the spring). Went to GM to have a replica of that key made with the chip code of my car/module. Key was a little sticky at first, but now its all gravy. Thanks for all the help fellas, I really appreciate it
