The I-rocZ's compared to the Z-28

I am sure I sound like a complete dummy for asking this question but what is the difference between the I-Roc's and the Z-28 if there is a difference? Also I was wondering if anyone can help me out with a couple problems I am having. My baby got broken into earlier this year and they busted out the lock on the passenger side and they busted the beauty ring around the radio. My first question is should I have the locks cut out and just patched over or should I have the locks replaced? It will cost the same amount to have the locks cut out as it would to have the lock fixed. My second question is does anyone know where I can find the beauty ring for cheap? I am sure GM will sell it to me for both of my arms but I am not willing to pay quite that much. Thanks for any help.

Difference between IROCs and Z28s?http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml

That should answer that

Cut the locks out? Maybe I am misunderstanding you here, but why in the world would you want to do that? It would be cheaper to buy 1 new lock cylinder for that door and have it coded to your existing key. That in addition to any bodywork that may need to be done.

Trim around the radio... Are you talking about the factory upper console trim the goes around the radio and climate controls - or a separate radio trim? Most of that stuff can be picked up at a junkyard for $5 if not free. There are a number of people on this boards classifieds parting out cars, and MANY more on www.thirdgen.org

My drivers side lock is all messed up too, how do you go about getting one that works with your existing key? I know you can buy a whole new lock/key combo, but I want to keep my stock keys (lol that sounded retarded).

Thanks for the help. What I mean by cutting the locks out is having the locks removed and patching the holes. I talked with a GM dealer and they told me that it would $400 to add the new lock and repair the door where the lock goes. He told me that it would also cost $400 to patch over the lock hole and paint it. So that is the reason that I was just wondering. I have a remote entry on it so having the lock is not that big of a deal. I like the idea of not having the locks so this can't happen again but I guess the next thing to go would be my windows. It is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't.

A dealer will install a new lock and code it so your old key will work.

A new lock cylinder is like $50 including having the dealer swap the tumblers so that it works with your key.

Installation takes all of a half hour and can be done by any dummy with a screwdriver.

$400 sounds about right. A lot of that is in the labor though. You could always get a used door and swap it over, and then have it painted. It would cost less, and you wouldn't have a hacked door. It would be more labor intensive on your part. I replaced my driver's door when the same thing happened to me a few years back. I paid $100 for the door, had the cylinder coded for $20, bought new hinge pins/bushings for $15, and had the whole car painted at my dealer for $600. They could have done just the door for $100.

Jim85IROC - $50!!! new + coding... SHEESH!

Even better, get a cylinder out of a junkyard, throw it in your toolbag, and get it coded to your key for $20. Its a junkyard piece, but all the internals will be replaced during coding anyway.

You can get a lock cylinder coded to your existing key at any locksmith, usually cheap (<20), and usually while you wait.

And like Jim said, they are REAL EASY to replace.
