Hyd.roller lifters or solid flat tappet lifters
Hyd.roller lifters or solid flat tappet lifters
I`m building a mild 383 hoping for 400HP I want to rev it to 6000-7000 rpm now is going to the roller lifters THAT much better or should I go with the solid lifters the solid lifters are a HELL of alot cheaper then the roller
the .501 lift solid cam with lifters is $300
the .501 in .525 ex. roller cam with lifters and pushrods is $1000
both are compcams
so wich do you think I should go with
also should I use a double roller timing chain or gears
the crank rods and pistons are in the block finally

LPE has a 383 making 480 Ft/lbs of torque and reliability to boot. Accel 74219 cam with 1.6 RR has final valve lift of 0.560, duration of 219 deg and lobe sep of 112. Reline is around 62-65 because it doesn't make power above that.
I'd go roller because that camshaft can have sharper ramps without the excessive duration.
I don't like gears because they tend to whine. Change your chain every 80000 miles and you should be fine.
Acutally, I did go with his combo except on the heads which were AFR 190 heads.

if I had the money, Id get the roller. why not a solid roller? the hyd. rollers wont rev as high cause of all the added weight (causes valve float). but on the other hand, dont need to rev as high to make the same power because the roller cams have beter design (read:more power). if you have to use a hyd roller then you shouild get a hydra-rev kit. this will allow you to rev the eng. to 7K no problem. considering you need to rev it that high. which I dont htink you will w/that size cam. If this is not a daily driver and is jsut a toy car/fun car, then def. get the solid roller. they have the most severe ramps and make the best power and cost less then hyd. setups due to not needing the rev. kit.
if I were you and you have at least 10:1 compression, then Id get a solid roler w/around 240-250 dur. @ .050 and around .550-.575 lift. the cam you mention would be somewhat tame in a 383.
JMHO

I want the solid roller lifters but I never seen them for non roller blocks and I don`t have the money for the rollers but if there that much better I`ll get them I don`t think my 383 will be done next year anyway

Pure and simple.......
If you sink the extra $700 you'd spend converting to a roller setup instead into better cylinder heads you'll make more power for your money. Period.
Roler cams have advantages that a flat tappet can't match- but they are not the bang/buck champ. Go check out Comp Cams website for a comparison they did of their own line of Xtreme Energy flat tappet vs. Xtreme Energy roller cams. Not enough difference to make you jump out of your chair and say "gotta have a roller cam!!"
