How much would a cam do
How much would a cam do
Trying to figure out whether it worth buying a cam for my engine when I'm going to make a 383 out of it in two years.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think I can get a cam that would be perfect for my future 383 and good for my curent engine, (350 HSR intake, 1.6 rockers,Trick flow heads, 1 5/8 headers).
Is there a cheap cam that would be worth it for only two years. I just think my stock cam is killing me with my heads and intake.
Thanks for any opinions.

Re: How much would a cam do
u can always go with something like a hotcam. CC305, XE 224/230. those wont make great 383 cams, but it will still run well. just not as well as a cam for a 383. i'd go ahead and do a good cam. you might be soo happy with it that you can hold off on the 383 for a while. if the 350 is setup right, it wont be too much less power than a good 383. and you can save some cash. save the money for when the 350 goes. then you'll have enough for the real goodies... this is all assuming you are like 80% of us who are on tight budgets. lol
Re: How much would a cam do
do you already have all of those other things on your engine or is your motor stock now?
If your motor is stock now then no you cant really get a cam that will work for both, not well anyways.
Why exactly is it you want a 383? You usually only bother to do that when you have to rebuild the motor anyways, not worth the horsepower gains if your motor is in good shape.

Re: How much would a cam do
Motor has about 160 K miles so I'm planing on rebuilding in about two years when I get a real job, again. In the future would like a light weight completly balanced rotating asymbly, with a little more displacment.
It is all stock bottom end, but I have had the heads, header, and intake for about a year. Along with learning how to burn my own chips. Would like a little more power, of course. Only 263HP @ 4800rpm / 328Torque @ 1900rpm.

221HP @ 4300rpm / 321Torque @ 3300rpm.
is what I hade before installing all that stuff. Thats why I'm looking at the cam. I'm also trying to get better data logging for modifing the chip.

Whoa.. something is deffinently not adding up
Like Doug said, your car puts out like 345lb's from the factory. With some good heads, intake and headers you should be WELL over 350hp and 390+torque.
A cam in a third-gen is ALWAYS a must. Our cars have, for the most part, pretty darned shatty cam's.

Re: How much would a cam do
Low torque is probably due to the HSR. It eats a little bit of low end torque but makes up for it with better high end flow. Having your max torque at 1900 RPM is a bit wierd for sure though. Probably due to the mismatch between cam and the rest of your system. Get a cam that is set for higher end flow as well and you will probably not lose any low end torque but will produce a decent amount more power.

Your engine is now definitly designed to operate in a higher powerband and youre going to need a cam that matches the powerband of whatever heads exactly it is you have.
The car may run fine without a custom burned chip setup for your car, however you may also be losing 50 hp by not getting that tune. Just remember the only way to get a good custom tune is on a dyno in real time.
