Post How much hp/tq can the 10 bolt rear take?

Hey everyone, I'm thinking of building a budget third gen and need to know how much power a third gen rear can take before it goes boom on street tires. Thanks!

If its a budget build up, I don't think you will make enough power to break the 10-bolt with street tires. Unless you do something dumb.

You'll be OK. A few folks are running 11 second quarter miles with the 10 bolts.

If you have a manual, it will put more strain on the rear when launching. I actually cracked some teeth on the pinion gear last time I was at the track with my 305 TPI setup.
My brother has gone through 7 rear ends so far with his 96 Trans Am 6 speed that I sold him almost 2 years ago.

If you can, get yourself a 9bolt from a thirdgen, they are stronger than a 10bolt.

i have heard you can't go very far on a 10 bolt i would def. invest in a 12 bolt or 9 bolt

i was running high 11's on a throttle stop pulling high 1.6 60' after 1 season it broke teeth off of the ring gear (stock) but other than that it has held up. oh it has an automatic and was on hoosier QTP's.

This is suppose to be a budget engine build up and you don't include $2400 rear as a budget item. Unless you consider it one.

9 bolt rear's aren't much stronger than 10 bolt rear's. and i know a guy in mobile who is running on a 10 bolt and he runs 10 sec. 1/4

9 bolts are much stronger than everyone thinks. I am willing to bet money that a new 9 bolt rear would hold up just as well or better than a Mustang 8.8 rear considering they were both new.

Theres guys with big power TTA's running in the 10's with them and the stock 3.27 gear.

also you have to remember that in most cases its not the hp/tq that causes them to break but rather the traction. the guys running in the 10's with the TTA's make all their power up top. so its not hurting the rear as much as say a 2k launch on ET streets would.

Off idle I pull 1.6x 60' with the stock 10 bolt. Had the car running low 12's for 2 years with no problems on MT Slicks. What kind of motor are you planning on running with the 10 bolt, and what transmission?

12 bolt or 9 bolt? they arent even in the same category the 12 bolt is the mack daddy man and like 2500 bucks. for a budget street car a 9 bolt would be perfect.

You're not quite right there. TTA's launch great when you have the boost at the line. I was running 1.6x with my stock setup getting 12.1@111. Then I started modding the car and haven't launched as good since the brakes won't hold the car anymore. I can only hold to about 3K but it should be at 3500 or better to get my launches back.

But I know of quite a few TTA's that were running 10s with the stock 9 bolt before changing the rear. Weren't broken yet but at those speeds, caution is better

As of right now, I'm soft on the launch and making power up top. Hopefully getting rid of the stock brake pads will be worth big dividends....

I broke two sets of 4.10 gears with a T56 in my '94, my 3.27 9-bolt held up better to a motor with more power and also a manual.
