how much $ to fix this?

I suspect that the flywheel is the problem with my friends 89 rs camaro. It doesn't start properly and I think the teeth are busted on the flywheel.. How much do you think it would cost to get this fixed????

"Doesn't start properly" is a compalin that is too general. You need to be more specific. Anyway, if you think it is the flexplate or flywheel, take out the starter and have someone turn the engine over slowly while you look at the teeth on the flywheel or flexplate. Other than that, it should probalbly be the same as a tranny R&R

Actually, my post was very specific. If the flywheel is the problem, how much money will it cost to fix it. I don't know how much a tranny R&R is either. A ballpark guestimation would be great I have no idea here and I'm considering buying this car.

if you care to know why I think its the flywheel.
Turn the key once and it grinds and sounds like there are either broken teeth or its missing teeth, second turn it usually works.

Could be missing teeth on the ring gear, starter could be misaligned, solenoid could be half-firing. Sound to me like a solenoid problem, which is less than $20 to replace. The ring gear is a little tougher to replace, you have to pull the trans to get to it. Once the tranny is out you can get a replacement ring gear and have it welded onto your flexplate for probably less than $40. If you can't pull the trans yourself it's gonna get expensive. DEFINITELY crawl under it and take a good look at the teeth before you replace anything. If the teeth are good pull the starter and just replace the solenoid.
