Post How long does it take to break in a rebuilt engine?

The block was honed and hot tanked, still stock pistons but new cast rings. New rod/main bearings. Crank was hot tanked and polished. 10 miles? 500 miles? 1000?

Thanks

Hmmmm.. the break-in period for new cars is roughly 500 to 1000 miles. So with you new moter I would say about the same about of time. 500 to 1000 miles. For this time period no full throttle starts and don't go over 60 mph.

about 500 mi.s of driving light will be good. you can go as fast as yo uwant pretty much, just dont floor it to get it there. the idea is to not stress the eng. during the breakin period, but to apply an even load for as long as poss. the best way to break in the eng. is on the freeway. just a nice steady cruise.

I disagree with both previous responses somewhat. You should never keep a new engine at a constant steady freeway cruise. A varying speed is better. I've rebuilt many engines and my theory on break-in is to take it easy no hard starts or take-off and do not redline or overheat it. You can run it pretty fast with no harm either. Just let it run up nice and easy let it shift and up again and shift with no redline shifts. Use a quality non-synthetic oil only for economic reasons you will drain it at 500 mi. no need to waste a high quality oil. On your 1st Oil change use a high quality synthetic oil (Plug for my favorite) like Amsoil and at about 1000 mi. do a filter change and a top off and then go into your routine oil change interval. My Z was broken in like this and it now has 205,000 miles and still runs strong and doesn't smoke or make unusual noises. before it had 200 miles on the clock it had already had seen 135 mph and one Mustang kill on the interstate. Heck even my most recent rebuild on my S10 Blazer with a 4.3 was run as I described and saw 100 mph. Pretty good for a V6 4X4 huh. Just don't hotdog it and it will be fine

On the initial startup after the rebuild, bring it to 2500 to 3000 rpm and keep it there for 30 to 45 minutes. Many factors determine a proper break in but it looks like an oem type rebuild from the way you described it.

Use conventional oil and change it at 1k miles. Cut open your filter if you are bored and look for unusual signs of wear.

I would drive it like you usually do except for redline shifts for the first 500 miles or so. After that you should be fine(and your clutch too, if you replaced that as well).

My Mustang continued to break in after 6k miles. It was put together tight and got quicker gradually.
