how hard is it to drop the 700r4

how hard is it to drop the 700r4

my question is i was wondering how hard it is to drop down the 700r4 and change the torque converter i have a bogging at idel only at idel only and my rpms are low at idel in drive gear only so if i was gonna change it how hard is it to drop that tranny down

All in all, it isn' too bad. Remove the tortion bar, the driveshaft, 6 bolts holding the bellhousing to the motor and 3 bolts holding the torque converter to the flywheel. There is also a few other things like kick-down cable, shift linkage, the four-prong connector on the driver-side of the tranny. I think that's about it. Hope this helps.

I imagine you'd want to drain it too. The only way to drain a 700R4 is to drop the pan AFAIK. That, my friend, is not easy. Wasn't for me anyway There was ATF all over the floor. Good luck!

It's not bad, I had to drop my trans during my engine swap....hardest part is that all the bolts underneath are normally rusted over. The torque arm bolts were a PITA.

If all you are doing is swapping out the converter no need to drain the trans , but don't forget to unhook the lines though.

THe cooler lines are probably going to make a nice mess, and plug the tailshaft, or it will drain itself.
ALso to drain it, couldn't you get one of those kits for installing a drain plug, and just drill a hole in the pan to drain it? Although it may be a stupid idea, tranny fluid in the drill.

what are you supposed to use to plug the tailshaft? or what could you use?

They tell you to drop the pan and unhook the kickdown cable from the valvebody. After breaking 11 of those transmissions, I got good at pulling them. I learned to unhook the kickdown cable at the throttle body (carb, TBI, etc), pull the cable from the bracket and drop the trans with the cable attached (saves laying in fluid). To plug the tailshaft, you can find plastic plugs from Jegs I think (check the mail order guys, harbor freight etc). I used a yoke from an old driveshaft for mine.

The cooler lines don't leak that badly. You'll get some fluid, but you won't "drown".
